Caraval series - a must read!!!!

This series is….without a doubt, one of the best fantasy series l've ever read. The magic system is so enchanting and imaginative, and the characters are impossible not to love. What truly sets this book apart is its unpredictability - every single chapter had me questioning what would happen next, in all 3 books. Just when I thought I had figured out where the stories were heading, they would take an entirely unexpected turn.

From start to finish, there wasn't a single moment where I felt bored or disengaged. The pacing was perfect, and the worldbuilding was so vivid that it felt like I was part of the game myself. This is the kind of series that grips you and doesn't let go until the very last page.

I'll be recommending this series to every fantasy lover I know - hell, even to my friends who aren't readers. It's so captivating that I truly believe it could turn a non-reader into a book lover.

... Read moreOkay, so you've heard the buzz about Caraval, and you're wondering, 'Is Caraval good?' Let me tell you, it's not just good – it's an experience! What really makes this series shine, beyond the enchanting magic, is how Stephanie Garber masterfully crafts a world where nothing is quite as it seems. The whole 'magic competition' aspect isn't just a backdrop; it's a living, breathing character that constantly challenges your perceptions. I loved how every clue and every interaction felt like a piece of a grand, intricate puzzle, often leading to shocking acts of 'betrayal' that genuinely caught me off guard. And the characters? Beyond just lovable, they're complex and flawed, making their journeys, especially when 'fake dating' or 'forced proximity' tropes come into play, incredibly compelling and emotionally resonant. If you've finished Caraval and are now left with that 'book hangover' feeling, desperately searching for 'books like Caraval,' you're in luck! I've been there, and I have a few recommendations that might just fill that magical void. First, if you loved the whimsical, slightly dark, and game-like atmosphere, you absolutely have to check out The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern. It has that same sense of mystery, intricate world-building, and a journey into a hidden, fantastical realm where stories come alive. It's less about a literal competition, but the sense of discovery and enchantment is very similar. Next, for the 'fake dating' and 'forced proximity' vibes, but with a high-stakes magical twist, I'd suggest A Court of Thorns and Roses (ACOTAR) by Sarah J. Maas. While it's fae fantasy and a bit more adult, the initial tension and slow-burn romance, combined with a world full of secrets and dangers, really captures that Caraval-esque feeling of growing close under pressure. The unpredictability and twists are definitely there too! If it was the sheer unpredictability and the immersive magical competition that hooked you, then The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern is another fantastic choice. It's set in a magical competition between two young illusionists, shrouded in mystery and romance. The world-building is breathtaking, and you'll find yourself just as lost and captivated as you were in Caraval. Finally, for those who enjoyed the blend of magic, mystery, and uncovering deep-seated secrets (and perhaps a touch of 'betrayal'), Serpent & Dove by Shelby Mahurin offers a compelling story of a witch and a witch hunter forced into marriage. It's got the 'forced proximity' down pat, plus a rich magic system and plenty of twists to keep you guessing. These books all share a little piece of what makes Caraval so special, whether it's the enchanting setting, the compelling character dynamics, or the thrill of the unknown. Happy reading, Lemon8 fam! Let me know if you pick any of these up!
