... Read moreDealing with newborn jaundice can be an emotional and challenging experience for any parent. From my personal perspective, understanding the feeding routine and phototherapy requirements made a significant difference in recovery speed. During the early days, frequent feeds are crucial—even if the baby seems sleepy. It's common to unintentionally starve a jaundiced baby if feeding is not offered proactively, as seen when feed amounts were initially low and contributed to worsening jaundice. Phototherapy, which uses light to break down excess bilirubin, is often prescribed and can be done either at the hospital or at home. Some parents may opt for hospital phototherapy due to the support and monitoring available, even though at-home phototherapy is an option. I found hospital-based care helped reduce the added stress during this critical period. A key takeaway is the importance of tracking wet diapers, as this is an indicator of adequate hydration. Even if diapers are wet, they might not be wet enough if the baby is underfed. Night waking to feed is essential; waiting for the baby to cry could result in missed feeding opportunities and slow weight gain. Additionally, lactation can be tricky with jaundice. In the very early days, colostrum intake is low and sticky, causing difficulties with latching. Sometimes supplementing with formula helps meet nutritional needs while waiting for milk supply to establish. The gradual increase in feeding volumes every few days matches newborn growth and helps prevent weight loss and worsening jaundice. This experience highlights that closely monitoring feeding, weight, and bilirubin levels—and maintaining communication with healthcare providers—can lead to timely treatment and a positive outcome. Sharing these insights offers reassurance to parents facing similar challenges and underscores the importance of proactive care during a newborn’s jaundice journey.
