Upgraded Our Pet Froglet & Tadpole’s Habitat! 🐸

When I first brought Fred, my little tadpole, and George, my tiny froglet, home, I knew I wanted to give them the best possible start. The original setup was functional, but as I watched them grow, I realized they deserved a habitat that truly mirrored their natural environment and supported their unique needs. That's why I embarked on this fun journey to create an upgraded, thriving space for them! For Fred, my tadpole, creating the right habitat was all about preparing for his incredible metamorphosis. I started with a clean, shallow dish of dechlorinated water. It's crucial for tadpoles to have access to water that's free of chlorine, which can be harmful. I added some light-colored pebbles at the bottom, not just for aesthetics but also to give him something to explore and to provide a natural feel. Monitoring the water quality and temperature was key; I made sure it stayed consistent and that there was enough space for him to swim freely. As Fred grew, I learned that a slightly larger space would be beneficial, especially as he began developing his little limbs. Anticipating his full metamorphosis from an aquatic tadpole to a land-dwelling froglet meant thinking ahead about a gradual transition, ensuring he'd have both water and land access when the time came. Then there’s George, my lively froglet! His upgraded habitat, as you can see in the 'after' pictures, is a complete transformation from his initial simple container. I decided to craft an elaborate terrarium, focusing on elements that mimic a natural, humid environment. The base is a layer of dark, moisture-retaining soil, which is excellent for maintaining humidity. I then carefully selected a vibrant green succulent plant – not only does it look beautiful, but its sturdy leaves provide perfect perching and hiding spots for George. I've seen him clinging to the textured leaves, blending in perfectly! A textured rock background adds to the natural feel and offers more climbing opportunities. A crucial element is the white water dish filled with small pebbles. It's shallow enough for George to easily get in and out for hydration and bathing, and the pebbles prevent him from accidentally drowning while providing a natural aesthetic. Good ventilation is also vital to prevent mold, so I ensured the terrarium had proper airflow without losing too much humidity. Beyond the habitat, a big question I had was: what do I feed a froglet like George? It’s completely different from feeding a tadpole! Through trial and error, and a lot of reading, I found that small insects are essential. For George, pinhead crickets and flightless fruit flies are his absolute favorites. I usually offer them every one to two days, depending on his appetite. It’s always so exciting to watch him stalk and catch his food! To ensure he gets all the nutrients he needs, I lightly dust his insects with a calcium and vitamin supplement a few times a week. I release the insects directly into his terrarium, usually near his favorite perching spots, so he can hunt naturally. It’s important not to overfeed and to remove any uneaten insects to keep the habitat clean. Seeing George happy and active in his new, enriched home makes all the effort worthwhile. It’s amazing to witness these little creatures thrive when given the right care and environment!
