Groom Horses with Us
The last couple of days have been spent brushing horses. With the warm weather we are hoping to spend a lot more time outside with our horses. #sahm #horsesoflemon8 #painthorses #roan #CapCut
You know how they say you can't be combing a horse and riding it simultaneously? Well, when it comes to proper horse grooming, that saying really rings true for me! It's an activity that truly demands your full attention, and for good reason. It's not just about making them look pretty; it's a vital part of their health, well-being, and strengthening the bond we share. Now that the warmer weather is finally here, my Paint Horses are shedding their winter coats, and brushing them has become a daily ritual. I find it incredibly therapeutic, almost a meditation. You really can't rush it or try to multitask; grooming is all about being present with your horse. First, I start with a good curry comb to loosen up all the dirt, dander, and shedding hair. It’s amazing how much comes off, especially from their beautiful roan coats! I work in circular motions, paying extra attention to areas where dirt tends to accumulate, like their neck and flanks. My horses actually seem to enjoy the massage! After the curry comb, I switch to a stiff brush to sweep away all the loosened debris. Then comes the softer brush for their face and a final polish on their body, making their coats shine. It's truly rewarding to see them transform from dusty to dazzling. Don't forget their manes and tails! A good detangler and a wide-toothed comb are essential to prevent breakage and keep them flowing freely. And of course, the hoof pick is a must to clean out any packed-in mud or stones, which is crucial for preventing lameness. Beyond the cleanliness, these dedicated grooming sessions are incredible opportunities for a full-body health check. I can feel for any new bumps, cuts, or tender spots that might indicate an issue. It’s a chance to connect with them, talk to them, and just enjoy their quiet presence. These moments are precious, and I often wish I could capture them perfectly. Sometimes, I even use apps like CapCut to piece together little video clips of our grooming adventures, creating fun memories of our time together. It’s these focused, one-on-one interactions that truly build trust and understanding between us. So, while you certainly can't groom and ride at the very same moment, dedicating specific, uninterrupted time to each activity makes both experiences so much richer and more rewarding for everyone involved.
