The best employee benefit at BLS: Miles & Points

Working as a Marketing Manager at a small company, I get to travel a lot and with that comes a TON of airline miles and hotel points.

The best part is, I get to keep them all for personal use.

When I travel, I tend to fly on the weekends which then I get returned as ‘comp’ days or extra pto that I can use when ever I want.

We already get 20 days of pto so these extra days are great for having extra long weekends in the summer.

This year I’ve already wracked up miles from flying to:

❤️California

❤️ Spain

❤️ New York

❤️ Chicago

Although this isn’t a typical ‘benefit’ it is definitely a major perk that I LOVE about my job.

At BLS, this unique perk allows employees not only to accumulate miles but also to retain them for personal use, which adds significant value beyond conventional paid time off (PTO) policies. Typically, employees receive standard PTO allocations—in this case, 20 days annually—but the ability to earn additional compensatory days off through strategic weekend travel greatly enhances flexibility. The concept of ‘comp’ days or extra PTO earned through work travel is a valuable addition to employee compensation packages. It enables employees to optimize their schedules for longer vacations or extended weekends, which can improve overall job satisfaction and work-life balance. Traveling on weekends and utilizing miles from business trips to destinations such as California, Spain, New York, and Chicago exemplifies how integrating travel rewards into employee benefits can create more personalized and rewarding experiences. Furthermore, miles and points programs encourage a culture of loyalty and motivation. Employees who can use these perks personally are more likely to feel appreciated and rewarded for their role in business travel activities, thus fostering engagement and retention. From an employer’s perspective, offering such benefits can position the company as attractive to prospective candidates in competitive job markets. For workers interested in maximizing these kinds of travel perks, understanding how airline loyalty programs and hotel rewards function is essential. Accumulating miles on business trips requires planning: choosing airlines and hotels that partner with loyalty programs, booking flights on off-peak days like weekends to gain additional PTO, and using points efficiently for personal holidays. Combining these strategies can help employees transform business travel into lasting personal advantages. In summary, the integration of miles, points, and compensatory PTO as employee benefits at BLS represents a modern approach to enhancing the traditional work perks package. This approach acknowledges the realities of frequent travel roles and offers tangible rewards that balance professional duties with personal enrichment.
