This Valentine’s Day, We’re Going Loco Moco

❤️ This is a favorite dish we discovered during breakfast in Hawaii. Caution: this is a heavy dish, so it’s best to have it and then take a long nap or a cozy cuddle with your loved one. It’s perfect for Valentine’s Day or a chilly winter day.

Ingredients

Cooked rice

Hamburger party

Eggs

Brown gravy

Green onions (optional)

Assembly

Cook the burger

Cook the egg (sunny side up)

Add the burger to the rice

Top with the egg

Now, here is where I made a mistake. Pour the gravy around the egg so it does not cook the egg.

Garnish with green onions and serve.

... Read moreLoco Moco is more than just a meal—it's a comforting experience that brings a taste of Hawaii right to your kitchen. When I first tried making this dish, I learned that the order of assembly is key to preserving the textures and flavors. Cooking the hamburger patty until it's nicely browned gives it a juicy base. Then, the sunny side up egg adds richness and a velvety yolk that oozes over the meat and rice. One important tip I found is to pour the brown gravy gently around the egg rather than directly on top of it. This prevents the heat from cooking the egg further, keeping the yolk runny and delicious. Using a quality premade brown gravy, like McCormick’s, can save time but feel free to make your own gravy from scratch for a more personalized touch. Garnishing with chopped green onions not only adds a fresh burst of color but also a mild sharpness that balances the richness of the dish. I often enjoy this meal especially on chilly days or Valentine’s Day, as it’s filling and perfect for sharing with someone special. Serving Loco Moco warm with a side of steamed vegetables or a simple salad rounds out the meal beautifully. And after indulging in this hearty breakfast, a cozy cuddle or a restful nap is just the perfect way to end the experience. Whether you're in Seattle or anywhere else, bringing a bit of Hawaiian comfort food into your home can make any occasion feel special.
