Drawing with Posca markers (archive)
This video is so old (2020-ish) but I still love this drawing! Prints are available! #sketchbook #art #artistsoflemon8
Hey everyone! I'm always getting questions about my art, especially when I use my beloved Posca markers. They’re truly one of my favorite tools for creating vibrant, opaque art, and they’re so versatile! You saw that old drawing I shared, and honestly, the possibilities with Posca pens are endless. If you're looking to dive into Posca marker art, or just need some fresh inspiration, let’s chat about some easy drawing ideas and essential techniques. First off, what should you draw with Posca markers? The beauty of these pens is that they work wonderfully for a huge range of subjects. For beginners, or when I just want to relax, I love starting with easy things to draw with Posca pens. Simple geometric shapes, abstract patterns, or even intricate doodles can look incredibly striking because of Posca's bold color payoff. Nature-inspired elements like leaves, flowers, or whimsical mushrooms are also fantastic. You can create stylized illustrations of everyday objects like coffee cups, plants, or even your favorite snacks. Lettering and calligraphy also look amazing with Posca markers due to their smooth, consistent flow. Now, let’s talk about Posca pen techniques and how to draw with Posca markers to get the best results. One of the key things to remember is that Posca markers are acrylic-based. This means they're opaque and can be layered beautifully once dry. Layering: This is crucial! Apply your first color, let it dry completely (which usually doesn't take long), and then add your next layer. You can even use lighter colors over darker ones, which is a huge advantage. Blending (Wet-on-Wet): While they dry quickly, you can achieve some soft blends by applying two colors next to each other and quickly blending them with a brush or even the tip of another marker if you're fast enough. However, for crisp lines, waiting for layers to dry is best. Outlining: Many artists use Posca markers for bold outlines. Once your main drawing is done and dry, go in with a fine-tipped black Posca (or any contrasting color) to make your artwork pop. Stippling & Dot Art: Create textures or entire images using small dots. This technique is meditative and yields stunning results. Achieving Smooth Coverage: For larger areas, make sure to shake your marker well and pump the nib a few times until the paint flows freely. Apply even strokes, overlapping slightly to avoid streaking. One of my favorite surfaces, as you can see from the OCR, is drawing with Posca markers on painted paper! This allows for a fantastic mixed-media effect. You can lay down a background wash of acrylic paint or watercolor, and once it's dry, go in with your Posca markers for details, highlights, and crisp lines. It adds so much depth and texture to your art. Don’t be afraid to experiment with different types of paper – thicker paper or Bristol board works great to prevent buckling. So, whether you're creating detailed illustrations, abstract pieces, or just doodling, Posca markers offer a world of creative possibilities. Grab some pens, a piece of paper (maybe even some painted paper!), and start exploring your own unique Posca art ideas today. Happy creating!
