Bomb fiber factory

The 1999 Longan Baking Plant explosion in Chiang Mai Province occurred on September 19, 1999, at the Longan Drying Plant of the Hong Thai Agricultural Development Co., Ltd., Ban Central District, Sanpatong District, Chiang Mai Province. The cause of the explosion was the transfer of potassium chlorate into the plant, causing a compression and explosion at about 10 a.m.

- 45 people were killed.

* Prosecution *

- The Court of First Instance convicted the factory management of unauthorized armaments evacuation and unauthorized building extension charges, punishable by 1 year in prison but 2 years on parole and a fine of 90,000 baht.

- District 5 Court of Appeal sentenced the 2nd and 3rd defendants to imprisonment for 1 year and 6 months and to imprisonment for Mr Lee Hong-wen for 10 years.

- The Supreme Court convicted the defendants of a total of three counts and ordered the imprisonment of the factory executive as follows:

- Mr. Pthan Trichran, manager, six years, 10 months and 20 days in prison.

- I am the executive chairman of the company. I will serve 10 years and 2 months in prison.

- Taiwanese partner Lee Hongwen is given 10 years in prison.
