World Tuna Day
World Tuna Day falls on May 2 of each year.
The United Nations (UN) set this day to campaign for people to recognize the importance of tuna, a hugely valuable resource in terms of food security, nutrition and the global economy.
Something to know about tuna.
- Tuna is one of the most traded aquatic species in the world, with more than 80 countries having a serious tuna fishing industry.
- It is a good source of protein, low fat and rich in omega-3 fatty acids, including vitamins B12 and selenium.
- Currently, fisheries control efforts are being made to prevent overfishing; so that oceanic tuna populations remain balanced and do not go extinct in the future.
