What’s in my bag? Disability Pride Month!

👏Disabled is not a dirty word.👏

Disability Pride Month is celebrated each year in July.

Disability Pride initially started as a day of celebration in 1990-the year that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law. The first official celebration of Disability Pride Month occurred in July 2015, which also marked the 25th anniversary of the ADA.

Disability pride month, celebrates disabled individuals embracing their disabilities as integral parts of who they are. They work to reclaim visibility in public and interacting fully with their disabilities out in the open and rejecting shame and internalized ableism.

... Read moreDisability Pride Month, established in 2015, serves as a reminder of the importance of acceptance and celebration of our disabilities as vital parts of who we are. The origins hark back to 1990, coinciding with the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). This month is not only about personal visibility but also about empowering the disabled community to advocate against ableism. The items I carry—including headphones, an inhaler, and an EpiPen—reflect the realities of living with a disability. Each item represents a facet of my journey and the unique challenges and triumphs that come with it. For instance, the sunflower lanyard is a symbol of communication support, often used to signal that I might need assistance. Compression socks and braces signify the importance of health management in daily life. Through sharing what I carry in my bag, I aspire to educate others about the significance of Disability Pride Month and invite more discussions about disability rights and awareness. As we celebrate this month, let's continue to uplift one another and challenge the prevailing narratives surrounding disabilities. Remember, advocating for ourselves doesn’t just enhance our lives; it nurtures a culture of inclusivity and understanding. Join the conversation online with hashtags like #DisabilityPrideMonth and #DisabilityIsNotInability to spread awareness and positivity!
