What’s in my bag? Disability Pride Month!

👏Disabled is not a dirty word.👏

Disability Pride Month is celebrated each year in July.

Disability Pride initially started as a day of celebration in 1990-the year that the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was signed into law. The first official celebration of Disability Pride Month occurred in July 2015, which also marked the 25th anniversary of the ADA.

Disability pride month, celebrates disabled individuals embracing their disabilities as integral parts of who they are. They work to reclaim visibility in public and interacting fully with their disabilities out in the open and rejecting shame and internalized ableism.

What’s in my bag?

-Headphones

-Inhaler

-Sunflower Lanyard with Communication Cards

-Vitamins and Meds

-Compression socks

-Compression shorts

-Cane

-EpiPen

-Wrist and knee braces (not pictured)

Remember to keep educating and standing up against ableism, always.

... Read moreStepping out into the world, my bag isn't just a collection of everyday items; it's a carefully curated toolkit for navigating life as a disabled person. What might seem like ordinary objects to some are, for me, vital components of independence and self-care – all part of embracing my identity, not hiding it. Take my Sunflower Lanyard with communication cards, for example. It's a discreet signal to those around me that I might have a non-visible disability and may need extra time, understanding, or assistance. It's a simple yet powerful tool for self-advocacy, allowing me to move through spaces with a little more confidence, knowing I've already communicated a basic need without uttering a word. And then there are the medical essentials: my inhaler, vitamins, meds, and EpiPen. These aren't signs of weakness; they're affirmations of life. Carrying them means I'm prepared for whatever my body might throw my way, rather than being limited by potential emergencies. It's about proactive care, ensuring I can participate fully in life without unnecessary worry. Sometimes, I even carry a small oximeter to quickly check my oxygen levels, which gives me immense peace of mind, especially on busy days. My compression socks and shorts, along with my cane and wrist/knee braces (even if they're not always pictured), are also crucial. They're my allies against pain, fatigue, and instability, helping me manage my physical symptoms so I can have more energy for the things I love. They allow me to stand taller, walk further, and engage more deeply with the world. These aren't devices that 'fix' me; they're aids that enable me to thrive as I am. For anyone who hears 'you are disabled,' I want to emphasize that this is not a label of deficit, but a descriptor of a lived experience. Embracing disability pride means acknowledging these practical aspects of life while simultaneously rejecting the shame and internalized ableism that society often tries to impose. It means understanding that my worth is not diminished by my needs, but rather, my resilience and adaptability are highlighted by how I meet them. Every item in my bag, from my headphones for sensory management to my cane for mobility, contributes to my autonomy. They are symbols of self-awareness, self-respect, and a firm refusal to let societal expectations dictate my capabilities. Disability Pride Month is a wonderful reminder to celebrate these aspects of ourselves, but the spirit of pride and self-advocacy is something we carry with us every single day. Let's continue to educate, assert our rights, and live authentically, showing the world that being disabled is something to be proud of.

I always have my Loop Engage earplugs and noise cancelling headphones with me. When I went out of the country on vacation, my mom got me the sunflower lanyard for autism and I felt seen and accepted ☺️☺️ I’m glad you’re able to keep everything you need on hand!

Dynamic Disabilities Exist| Here’s what that means
A dynamic disability is a condition or impairment that can change in severity and impact over time. This can include periods of remission or exacerbation, which can make it difficult for people to predict and manage their symptoms. For example, someone with a non-visible dynamic disability might be

ADHD is a severely imparing disability
I went over a week without washing my face, showering, or brushing my teeth. A tiny cyst on my neck got infected because I literally couldn’t bring myself to treat it. It sounds extreme, but ADHD isn’t just forgetfulness—it can make even the simplest self-care feel impossible. It wasn’t until I to

Chronic pain and disability is a challenge I don't wish on anyone. It is so hard to stay positive during flareups especially as someone already prone to depression. Making #nailart has been a gentler process than my usual #3Dart so it's been fun making some press-on sets for myself.
