Yellowface

Finally read and loved this book! It was so entertaining and attention-grabbing. One of the ones I would think about, and feel excited to read again and continue the narrative.

I loved the unreliable narrator and was reading like 😯 because this girl's audacity just kept going more and more insane.

This book is very meta about Goodreads reviews, and the relationship between the author and the writing.

... Read moreOkay, so I finally picked up Rebecca F. Kuang's 'Yellowface,' and let me tell you, it completely lived up to the hype and more! From the moment I saw that bright yellow book cover, I was intrigued, but nothing prepared me for the journey inside. Finishing the last page, seeing that '100% Completed' on my e-reader and giving it a solid 5-star rating felt so satisfying because this book truly delivers. What truly kept me glued to the pages was the protagonist, June Hayward, and her utterly audacious, unreliable narration. Seriously, her audacity just keeps escalating, and you find yourself reading with your jaw on the floor, thinking, 'Did she just do that?' It's a masterclass in character development, making you question everything, anticipate every next wrong step, and simultaneously feel a strange mix of horror and fascination. This narrative style isn't just a gimmick; it's central to the book's biting commentary. You're constantly walking a tightrope between sympathy and absolute disgust, which makes for a truly unforgettable reading experience. The book is incredibly meta, delving deep into the world of publishing, cultural appropriation, and the often-toxic landscape of online reviews, especially on platforms like Goodreads. Kuang fearlessly dissects the complex relationship between an author and their work, the public's perception, and the messy business of identity. It made me think so much about who gets to tell what story, and the real-world consequences when those lines are blurred or, in June's case, completely erased. It’s a sharp, satirical mirror held up to our current literary and social media climate. Beyond the unreliable narrator and the meta-commentary, 'Yellowface' is also a thrilling exploration of guilt, ambition, and the lengths people will go to for success. The story's pacing is excellent, with each chapter building tension and deepening the moral dilemmas faced by June. I found myself thinking about the characters and their motivations long after I'd put the book down for the night, eager to get back to it. It’s rare to find a book that’s both so entertaining and so thought-provoking at the same time. If you're looking for a book that will keep you guessing, make you cringe, and challenge your perceptions of authorship and ethics, then 'Yellowface' by Rebecca F. Kuang is an absolute must-read. It’s a brilliant, timely novel that will spark conversations and stay with you for a long time. I wholeheartedly recommend adding this 5-star read to your list; you won't regret it!

5 Thrillers I Can’t Stop Thinking About 🤔
You ever read a book and when you finish it, you can’t seem to stop thinking about it? I will just be going about my day and a scene from the book just pops into my brain 🧠 For me, all of these thrillers just had that extra “something” that made them memorable and I can’t recommend them enough!

Yellowface
R.F. Kuang’s Yellowface is a razor-sharp, uncomfortable, and utterly addictive dive into the dark side of the publishing world. What starts as a story of a "victimless" crime quickly spirals into a psychological thriller fueled by social media outrage and a staggering amount of delusion.

campus novels you need to read 🍂🧡🏫
One genre of fall books I'll always reach for is the campus novel. I think I love them so much because academic institutions exist as very material microcosms of larger societal problems, allowing them to contain within strict borders high stakes power dynamics. They're also incredibly flex
