Anyone can code! - What is an algorithm?🍋

'Algorithm' is one of those tech buzz words that everyone thinks is really complicated! You've probably heard of the YouTube or tiktok algorithm as being some magical, unknowable process. However, an algorithm at its core definition is actually very simple.

💚 An algorithm is a set of instructions 💚

Even a recipe is an example of an algorithm!

An algorithm must have:

💚 defined input and output

- note in the pseudocode in slide 2, ingredients are the input and cookies are the output.

💚 unambiguous instructions

- A computer can't make decisions like a person can. Our example program might crash because we said mix the ingredients ... but mix them with what? a whisk, spoon or mixer?

💚 finite number of steps

- No algorithm can go on forever. it needs to have a beginning and an end, with no infinite loops to get stuck on in the middle.

Thanks for reading! I don't know if this post will do well, but I think that with tech taking over our world, everyone should understand a bit about how it works. As well, anyone can become a programmer professionally! it is not just for geniuses, and hopefully simple posts like this can inspire someone to believe they can do it. I tried to take handwritten notes because I know that lemon8 prefers to have pics from the camera roll, so hopefully it works 🤞

In the future I should make a post about the benefits of learning to code.

Algorithms are fundamental in tech today. Whether we realize it or not, algorithms shape our online experiences, from social media feeds to search engine results. In the most basic terms, an algorithm is a step-by-step procedure to solve a problem. The world of programming isn’t reserved for the elite; with accessible resources and learning platforms, anyone can start coding today. In education, coding is gaining traction, with schools integrating it into their curricula. Learning to code not only cultivates problem-solving skills but also enhances logical thinking and creativity. Online courses, coding boot camps, and resources like Codecademy and Khan Academy offer accessible pathways to understanding programming. Moreover, the tech industry is consistently in search of diverse talents, and understanding algorithms is a gateway to many job opportunities in fields like data science, web development, and software engineering. As technology evolves, so too does the necessity for the next generation to be equipped with coding skills. Embracing coding, and algorithm comprehension can lead to endless possibilities and career growth.
