Funny cat art! Count CATula 😼🧛🏻

So many of you asked about the process behind my 'Count CATula' piece, and I'm so excited to share more about how this spooky-cute Dracula cat came to life! Honestly, the idea of a grey cat dressed as Dracula, complete with a red cape and ruffled collar, just popped into my head one day. I wanted to make something both Halloween-y and adorable, and what's better than a pet in a costume? When I started on this watercolor drawing, I knew I wanted vibrant colors that would really pop and capture the playful yet eerie vibe. That's why I reached for my Derwent Inktense pencils. If you haven't tried them, they're amazing! They apply like a regular colored pencil but then, once you add water, they transform into an intense, permanent ink. I love working on watercolor paper because it handles the wet media so well without buckling, giving you a smooth surface for blending and layering. For the finer details, like those mischievous fangs and the bright, expressive eyes, a gel pen is an absolute lifesaver. It creates crisp lines and highlights that really stand out against the watercolor, making the character come alive. And for the background? Instead of painting one, which can sometimes be tricky to get just right, I meticulously cut out a piece of patterned paper. It adds a unique, crafty dimension to the art and ties everything together. I sometimes add little touches like a red playing card for extra flair, but for this one, the patterned paper gave it a unique, handmade feel. You might have noticed the 'A SIGHT FOR SORE EYES' text above my 'Count CATula.' Sometimes a piece just needs a little something extra, and I found some cute cut-out letters that fit perfectly. Even if the phrase doesn't quite make literal sense for a vampire cat, it adds to the quirky charm, right? It really got me thinking about how much personality you can add to your art cards or illustrations by incorporating different elements and even a touch of humor.
