Art question; pick a side

I am checking if I am delulu or not

These are two art studies I have painted. Please pick a side, left or right, based on the proportions. Once I get a couple answers I can explain the context.

✏️ EDIT for context..

This is a Virgil Hoo study.

Left is the proportion I originally drew.

Right is corrected to be exactly like my reference photo

But I kinda liked my "incorrect" proportion more. Seems like some people agree so i appreciate it! Maybe this will help me stick to my instincts a bit more often.

One thing to notice is that the right pose is just more exaggerated and I failed to push mine as hard.

The lean on the right is much more pronounced. And the right forehead is smaller, implying that the head is tilted at a more upward angle.

When drawing, it is very common to "straighten out" a pose, even when trying not to. But I also like mine on the left so idk haha

... Read moreWow, this 'pick a side' challenge really hit home for me! It perfectly illustrates the constant battle we artists face between observation, reference, and our own creative interpretation. When I first started diving into figure studies, especially from masters like Virgil Hoo, I often found myself in a similar predicament trying to capture those intricate details and exaggerated poses. Virgil Hoo's work, known for its dynamic figures and often dramatic proportions, is fantastic for studying how artists can manipulate realism to create impact. He doesn't just draw what's there; he interprets it. This is where the 'proportion principle of art' really comes into play. It's not always about drawing things exactly as they are in real life, but rather about creating harmonious and visually pleasing relationships between different parts of a subject or elements within a composition. Think about how a cartoonist might exaggerate features for comedic effect, or how classical sculptors used ideal proportions to convey perfection. It’s a conscious choice. My own journey with proportion often involves comparing my initial sketches to the reference. Just like you noticed with the 'exaggerated lean' or the 'upward head tilt' that makes a forehead smaller, sometimes our brain 'corrects' what we see to what we think should be there. It’s so common to 'straighten out' a pose! I've been there, making a dynamic, leaning figure look a bit stiff, or simplifying the elegant curve of a ruffled blouse or the dramatic sweep of bat wings when sketching. What I've learned is to really push myself to see those exaggerations. One technique I found helpful is to simplify the pose into basic 'elements of lines' – think gesture drawing – focusing on the overall flow and energy before getting bogged down in details like a top hat or umbrella. When looking at your two studies, the difference in the lean and the head tilt is striking. The right one, closer to the reference, has a more dramatic exaggerated lean and the smaller, tilted head really gives it more attitude. But your left one has its own charm; it feels a bit more grounded, even if less dynamic. This highlights another aspect of the 'elements of art form' – how proportion affects 'positive space art'. The way the figure occupies space, the balance between its form and the background, changes subtly with altered proportions. A more dynamic pose, like the one with the exaggerated lean, can create more tension and interest in the positive space around the figure. For anyone trying to improve their understanding of proportion, I recommend a few things. First, really scrutinize your references. Don't just look, *analyze*. What makes that exaggerated lean look so good? How does the line of the jeans follow the leg's curve? Second, don't be afraid to do quick 'expression art challenge' sketches where you deliberately push proportions to extremes. Try making the bat wings enormous or the top hat comically small. It helps you understand the boundaries. Finally, practice with various subject matters. Even something like hand reference studies can be incredibly insightful for understanding complex anatomical proportions in motion. It's all about training your eye to see, not just what's there, but how it's there, and then confidently deciding how you want to interpret it in your own art.

the left one is more stylistic, but the right one has better proportions. I like right the best. Both are really good though

I’ve had the E.L.F lip oil for such a long time and I love the clear color so much. I use it every day. I just got the NYX one and they’re actually really different. The E.L.F one is more of a lip gloss while the NYX one is more oily if that makes sense. The applicator is also a little bigger and s
