Four steps to digital painting 🎨

Hey everyone! Building on my initial 4-step digital painting process, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into each stage and share more of my personal insights, especially for those of you looking to refine your own digital art workflow. This is my full drawing process, and I'm excited to share more practical tips with you! Step 1: Deepening Your Sketching Game When I approach a figure sketch, it’s truly a balance, as I mentioned. Starting with a loose croquis or gesture drawing helps me capture the overall energy and flow of the pose. Don't be afraid to make quick, sweeping lines – it's about feeling the pose, not perfection. After getting that initial energy down, I then start to measure and refine, using basic geometric shapes to block out the head, torso, and limbs. This structural approach ensures proportions are correct before committing to details. Digital tools are fantastic here; you can easily adjust and transform your sketch without erasing, which encourages more experimentation. I often flip my canvas horizontally to spot any anatomical imbalances or awkward angles that I might miss otherwise. Step 2: Mastering Values with Greyscale This stage, where I paint in greyscale, is arguably the most critical for creating depth and form. My trick of using accessibility mode to turn my whole screen greyscale isn't just a quirk – it genuinely helps me see pure values without the distraction of color. Why is this so important? Because if your values don't work in greyscale, adding color won’t fix it; it’ll just make a colorful mess! I focus on establishing a clear light source and then building up the darkest shadows, midtones, and brightest highlights. This isn't about defining every tiny detail yet, but rather about creating a solid foundation of light and shadow that will make your figure feel three-dimensional. Think of it as sculpting with light and dark. Step 3: Bringing Color to Life with Blending Modes The coloring stage is where the magic really starts to happen over the greyscale foundation. My go-to method involves creating a new layer set to 'Color' blending mode. This allows me to paint directly onto the greyscale, and the colors automatically pick up the values beneath them. It's incredibly efficient! However, as I noted, highlights can sometimes lose their vibrancy. That's why I add a second layer on 'Saturation' blending mode and use light grey or desaturated colors to bring back that pop in the brightest areas. For specific effects, like the iridescent sheen on the shirt with its purple shadows, blue midtones, and aqua highlights, I often experiment with gradient maps. They offer an amazing way to quickly shift color temperatures across your value range, adding a sophisticated touch to your palette. This also allows me to define the specific colors for elements like the blue top and grey skirt seen in the final painting. Step 4: The Art of Rendering Finally, we arrive at rendering – a step that can sometimes feel daunting but is essentially about refining and polishing your artwork. If you've ever wondered 'what is rendering in digital art?', it's the process of adding those final layers of detail, texture, and subtle light effects that elevate a painting from good to stunning. This is where I zoom in and meticulously work on edges, adding crisper lines where needed and softer blends for smoother transitions. For clothing, I focus on the subtle folds and how light interacts with the fabric. While I might joke about not being great at backgrounds, even simple atmospheric blurs, color gradients, or abstract shapes can beautifully frame your rendered figure without demanding excessive detail. It’s about making the figure stand out and feel complete within its environment. It's a satisfying final push where all the previous steps come together.
