book recs by palestinian authors

here are just two of the palestinian books i’ve been reading & recommending recently. (feel free to add your own in the comments!)

against the loveless world by susan abulhawa is a deeply moving, emotional read that i couldn’t put down.

squire by nadia shammas and sara alfageeh was engaging and poignant, with such a lovely art style where characters truly leapt off the pages.

... Read moreHey bookworms! Many of you reached out after my initial post about 'Against the Loveless World' and 'Squire,' asking for more details. I totally get it – these books by Palestinian authors left such a strong impression on me, and I want to dive deeper into why they're truly exceptional reads that deserve a spot on your shelf. Let's talk about Susan Abulhawa's 'Against the Loveless World.' When I mentioned it was 'deeply moving' and 'heart-wrenching,' I wholeheartedly meant it. This novel is an exquisitely written, captivating journey following Nahr, a Palestinian woman whose life unfolds across various prisons and countries. It's not just a story; it's an immersive experience. Abulhawa’s prose is so vivid, painting a detailed picture of Nahr's struggles, her incredible resilience, and her unwavering spirit. I found myself completely engrossed in her journey, feeling every injustice and every flicker of hope. The way Abulhawa explores profound themes of displacement, identity, and the universal search for home – especially that poignant idea of 'exiles and the earth never being steady' – truly resonates. If you're looking for a novel that will challenge your perspective and stay with you long after you turn the last page, this is it. It’s a profound read that I’d recommend exploring, perhaps even as an audiobook, to fully immerse yourself in Nahr's world. Then there's 'Squire' by Nadia Shammas and Sara Alfageeh. As a graphic novel, it offers a completely different, yet equally poignant, reading experience. The art style is absolutely stunning; the characters truly leap off the pages, making the story incredibly engaging. But this isn't just a visually appealing comic. It's a beautifully crafted graphic novel that offers a sharp look at imperialism and colonialism through the eyes of Aiza, a young girl striving to become a knight in a war-torn empire. It’s a fantastic coming-of-age story ingeniously wrapped in a fantastical setting, carrying a powerful allegorical weight. The narrative reminds us of the importance of 'listening to stories and history,' making complex historical and political themes accessible and thought-provoking. I loved how it made me think, while also being an incredibly fun adventure. It's perfect if you seek something visually rich and intellectually stimulating. Both of these books, while distinct in genre and style, share a common thread: they offer vital perspectives from Palestinian authors. They are more than just stories; they are windows into experiences, histories, and cultures that are often overlooked. Reading works like these enriches our understanding of the world and broadens our empathy. If you've been searching for powerful Palestinian books or specific titles like these, I genuinely encourage you to pick them up. They’re not just recommendations; they’re invitations to explore compelling narratives that deserve to be heard. What other Palestinian authors have you enjoyed? I'm always eager to expand my reading list!
