because horror isn’t only for winter …

infested by angel luis colón has got ALL the bug horror you never knew you needed. the plot flies by and the discussions around gentrification, identity, and challenging family dynamics were really great.

the devourers by indra das is a dark & slow burn, an ode to storytelling and legacy, and a reckoning with identity and who controls it. it’s very carnal, very animalistic, and very rooted in the body.

... Read moreAs we delve deeper into the realm of horror literature beyond the winter season, it’s essential to highlight works that not only captivate but also challenge societal norms. 'Infested' invites readers into a world where a young teen grapples with identity and an unusual paranormal experience framed by gentrification. The story serves as a reflection of modern urban challenges, weaving in themes of displacement and the impact of environment on personal journeys. Likewise, 'The Devourers' by Indra Das offers a haunting blend of horror and rich cultural heritage, evoking a sense of primal instinct through its narrative structure. Both novels emphasize the importance of legacy in storytelling and challenge readers to rethink their relationship with horror genres, urging them to seek out tales that resonate with real-life fears and complexities. These books demonstrate that horror can serve a dual purpose: to entertain and to provoke thought. Many readers are beginning to appreciate how horror can address pressing social issues, making it a relevant genre year-round. As summer approaches, fresh titles are emerging that challenge conventions and expand the genre's boundaries, ensuring that horror remains a significant part of our literary landscape, no matter the season.
