queer space vibes?

junker seven by olive j. kelley is a fast-paced futuristic queer sci-fi romance that mirrors our current world all too well. It’s got grief & rage, but also community & hope.

we follow Castor, a physically disabled & autistic junker making ends meet by scavenging and selling spare parts. they stay away from the escalating transphobia and galactic revolution led by activist Juno Marcus.

that is – until they get a job offer for an unbelievable amount of money. they’ve just got to safely transport Juno across the galaxy first, and keep her safe from the Intergalactic Police Force (IPF) and the folks that support a violent political leader.

Castor is determined to view this job as simply a job, but Juno draws everyone into her orbit. as they start to fall from her, they also can’t help but become swept into her cause … and maybe change the galaxy for the better.

... Read moreI recently picked up Olive J. Kelley's 'Junker Seven' and it absolutely blew me away. As someone always on the lookout for fresh, inclusive sci-fi, this book hit all the right notes. It's not just a story; it's an experience that resonates deeply with our current world, despite being set in a distant, futuristic galaxy. Castor, our main character, is truly a breath of fresh air. As an autistic and physically disabled junker, their perspective brings such a rich, grounded authenticity to the narrative. They're just trying to get by, scavenging parts, and staying out of the galactic politics – a feeling I think many of us can relate to when faced with overwhelming world events. Watching Castor's journey from a reluctant participant to someone deeply invested in the cause was incredibly moving. Their internal struggles with grief and rage felt so real, making their eventual embrace of community and hope all the more powerful. Then there’s Juno, the charismatic trans revolutionary love interest. She's a force of nature, pulling everyone into her orbit, including Castor. The dynamic between them is just spectacular – a genuine, super sweet romance that blossoms amidst interplanetary conflict and deep societal issues like escalating transphobia. It’s a love story that feels earned, built on shared purpose and mutual respect, not just convenience. The chemistry is undeniable, making their "romantic revolutionary adventure" feel truly epic. The world-building is another standout. Kelley crafts a universe that's both vast and intimately detailed. From the dangerous, sprawling junkyards where Castor makes a living, to the high-stakes political arenas, every setting feels vivid. And yes, for those who caught the hint from the book's 'Nutrition Facts' summary, there's even a delightful touch like a goldfish on a spaceship – a small detail that adds so much charm and quirkiness to an otherwise intense narrative. It’s these unique elements that elevate 'Junker Seven' beyond just another sci-fi romance. What truly makes this book a must-read for me is its heart. It’s fearless in tackling tough themes like grief, systemic oppression, and the fight for justice, yet it's also brimming with optimism. It reminds us that even in the darkest times, community can be found, hope can flourish, and one person (or two, in this case!) can truly make a difference. If you're looking for a fast-paced, deeply emotional, and truly inclusive queer sci-fi romance, 'Junker Seven' should be at the top of your list.
