Screen free morning

I wish everyone morning could be like this, but more often than not, the TV is always on.

I find it comforting and helps my overstimulation to have a show on in the background and often my toddler is uninterested in it. When we have completely screen-free times in this house, it’s just as much of a detox for me.

Sometimes, I put shows and movies on for my toddler with the intention of her sitting down and watching it, but more often than not, it’s basically just white noise in our house.

TV gets a lot of flack on social media, but I see it as a tool.

Let me know if you want some low-stimulation shows and movies for your toddler✨

... Read moreIt's not always easy to ditch screens, especially when mornings can feel so hectic. I totally get it! Sometimes, having the TV on in the background feels like a comfort, a way to manage the morning rush. But lately, I've been experimenting with creating more screen-free mornings, and honestly, it's been a game-changer for both me and my little one. It’s like a mini-detox for my brain, and I've noticed how much more engaged and creative my child becomes when the screens are off. If you're like me and looking to embrace more screen-free time, here are a few things I've found helpful in building a calmer, more creative morning routine: 1. Preparation is Key: One of the biggest helpers is setting things up the night before. I try to lay out clothes, prep breakfast items, and most importantly, gather some engaging activities. This way, when we wake up, there’s no scramble for entertainment. Knowing exactly what’s available makes it easier to resist the urge to turn on the TV. 2. Start Small: You don't have to go cold turkey! Maybe start with 30 minutes of no screens, and gradually extend it. Even a small shift can make a huge difference in the overall feel of your morning. Some days might be easier than others, and that's perfectly normal. 3. Designated Play Zones: Having a special spot with inviting activities makes a huge difference. Think of it as an 'invitation to play.' This is where the magic really happens! For us, these mornings are filled with hands-on exploration. Instead of passively watching, my little one is *doing*. I've seen her engrossed in drawing, like sketching a vibrant rainbow on a piece of paper, or meticulously placing colorful wooden puzzles together. A tin of stickers can provide endless entertainment, fostering fine motor skills and creativity. We also love looking through books – not just storybooks, but even something like an 'Ecology & Ecosystems' book can spark curiosity and conversation, even if it's just about the pictures and textures! Other favorites we rotate include building blocks, playdough, simple sensory bins (like dry pasta or rice with scoops), or even just independent reading time with picture books. Sometimes, we'll listen to music or an audiobook while playing, which adds a lovely background atmosphere without the visual overstimulation. It's amazing how much quieter and more focused our mornings feel without the constant flicker of a screen. It's not always perfect, and some mornings screens happen, and that's okay! The goal isn't perfection, but more moments of connection and imaginative play. What I've found is that these screen-free times aren't just for my child; they're a detox for me too. I feel less overstimulated and more present. It truly helps us start our day with a sense of calm and creativity. If you’re struggling to find low-stimulation options, remember there are so many creative avenues to explore beyond just shows. Just observe what sparks your child's interest and run with it! What are your go-to screen-free morning activities or routines? I'd love to hear your ideas!
