Nail DON’Ts: Part 1

Maintaining long and healthy natural nails demands not only careful care but also awareness of what actions to avoid. From my personal experience, the biggest nail growth setbacks often stem from simple, daily mistakes that can weaken or damage the nail structure. For instance, I have learned that avoiding using my nails as tools for opening packages or scratching surfaces is crucial. This seemingly harmless habit can cause chips, cracks, or breaks that set back nail growth by weeks or even months. Another nail don’t I follow strictly is steering clear of harsh chemicals without protection. Whenever I clean or handle detergents, I always wear gloves because these substances can dry out and weaken nails, leading to brittleness and peeling. It's especially important when your nails are bare because they lack the protective barrier that gels or polishes provide. Also, as tempting as it may be, I resist the urge to bite or pick at my nails or cuticles. This not only damages the nail plate but also increases the risk of infections. Instead, regularly moisturizing the cuticle area with oils or creams helps keep the nail bed healthy and promotes better growth. From my journey with natural nails, one careless moment such as missing a protective base coat or using nails improperly has caused growth delays and frustration. So, patience and mindful habits are key. Remember, long natural nails are built just as much by what you DON’T do as by what you do. Avoiding these pitfalls can save you time and keep your nails looking their best over the long haul.
