The Only 2 Countries That Tax You For Life 💸🌍

Almost every country in the world 🌎 follows residency 🏡 based taxation. You pay taxes where you live and once you leave, the responsibility ends. But there are two exceptions.

🇺🇸 United States

The U.S. is the only major economy that uses citizenship based taxation. Even if you move abroad permanently, you must still file annual tax returns with the IRS 📑. Around 9 million Americans live overseas and remain under these rules. Double taxation treaties can reduce the burden, but compliance is expensive and complex. Renouncing U.S. citizenship is the only true exit 🛂 and it often comes with an exit tax on worldwide assets. In 2022 alone more than 2,000 Americans renounced their passports, many citing tax reasons.

🇪🇷 Eritrea

Eritrea enforces a 2 percent diaspora tax on the income of citizens living abroad 🌍. Collection is controversial and has been condemned by the United Nations because of reported intimidation and threats. Countries like Canada and several in Europe have even restricted Eritrea’s ability to collect it. For Eritrea the policy is less about revenue, since the country is small, and more about maintaining political control over its citizens abroad ⚖️.

Everywhere else, once you leave, the tax obligation ends ✈️. In the United States and Eritrea the system follows you for life 💀💸.

... Read moreWhen most people think about paying taxes, they assume their obligation ends once they leave the country where they reside. However, the United States and Eritrea stand out as notable exceptions, taxing citizens for life regardless of where they live. This rare approach draws attention for its complexity and significant impact on expatriates. In the case of the U.S., citizenship-based taxation means that American citizens must file annual tax returns and possibly pay taxes on their global income, even if they live permanently overseas. About 9 million Americans are affected by these rules, which often involve navigating double taxation treaties designed to prevent being taxed twice by both the U.S. and the country of residence. Despite treaty reductions, the process remains costly and complex, discouraging for many expats. For those seeking relief, renouncing U.S. citizenship is a drastic option but comes with an exit tax on worldwide assets, underscoring the lifelong reach of U.S. tax laws. Eritrea’s approach differs but is equally persistent. The country imposes a 2 percent diaspora tax on Eritrean citizens living abroad, a policy that has sparked controversy and condemnation from organizations such as the United Nations. Enforcement issues include reports of intimidation and threats, prompting some countries like Canada and parts of Europe to limit Eritrea’s tax collection efforts. For Eritrea, the diaspora tax serves less as a revenue source and more as a tool to maintain political influence over its citizens scattered globally. These citizenship and diaspora taxes highlight important considerations for individuals planning to move abroad or already living overseas. Understanding these policies can help prevent unexpected tax liabilities and navigate compliance requirements effectively. While most nations use residency-based taxation systems—where tax responsibility ends upon relocation—the U.S. and Eritrea’s lifelong tax obligations serve as critical exceptions. For expats, staying informed about such taxation policies can influence decisions on destinations, financial planning, and even citizenship status. Awareness of international tax obligations, including potential penalties and complicated filing requirements, equips taxpayers with the knowledge to manage risks and explore legal avenues to mitigate burdens. Ultimately, these systems underscore how some countries retain fiscal ties to their citizens far beyond borders, shaping the financial lives of their global diaspora.

If you don’t ever come back to the US, do you technically have to pay them though? Like for real here, what are they going to do to you if you are in Europe? Or Australia?
