How I Use Credit Cards as a College Student

💳💵💳💵💳💵💳💵💳💵💳💵💳💵💳💵

I regret not getting my first credit card at 18. Now I wouldn’t advise that every 18 year old get a credit card, especially if you are a big spender, but at the very least I would recommend opening a card up and only paying for like Spotify with that card.

Cards are obviously great to show credit history in order to rent your first apartment or lease a vehicle. However, I never realized that I could make money on every day purchases with a credit card until I got one. Before, I used to just pay for my rent and groceries with my debit card. I’ve always been a big saver since I got my first job at 16, and rarely treat myself to new clothes or to dining out. Now I will use my credit card to pay for groceries while earning 3-5% cash back. Might as well get that small “discount” if it’s a purchase you’re already going to make! That’s why I say that some people should not get a card, since having a large credit line may be tempting to make unnecessary purchases.

1️⃣ Discover It Cashback for students

Can’t recommend this card enough for beginners. I want to make it clear that I do not have student loans, so that may impact your chance for approval.

My friend gave me a referral link that earned us both $50 as a statement credit when I opened my card! Earn 5% cash back on rotating categories… last month was on Apple Pay and gas stations and I earned the full $75 cash back for that category. I used Apple Pay for groceries and obviously needed gas every few weeks.

At the end of your first year, Discover matches your earned cash back so if you earned $150, you get another $150 back.

2️⃣ Capital One Savor One

To be honest, I mainly got this card to put groceries on it. I got a really low credit limit which is actually great for me since I don’t want to be tempted to use it for any other reason. Sometimes I won’t pay off my Discover card until the end of the month, but I like to pay off my Savor One card as soon as my purchase posts just since there’s a low credit limit.

I do plan on using it for trips, though. It comes with a complimentary UberOne membership, and I only use Uber/UberEats when I’m traveling. I also plan on buying NBA tickets with this card through the Capital One portal, so that would earn 8% cash back.

APPS

Download the apps for whatever cards you have, and get into the habit of checking it once every day or two days. I personally really love looking over my statements and seeing the rewards I get each month.

SoFi

If you have a regular savings account, meaning that your savings isn’t making 4.5% APY, then please open up a banking account with SoFi! Even if you only have $1,000 in savings you can make a good amount of money just by having this account. I also really like their credit score tool that allows you to simulate how certain decisions would impact your score.

Credit Karma

This is a given, but this is the first place I will check my credit score at when there are any changes. You can see how your score is in every ranking, and also get new credit card recommendations.

... Read moreIt's amazing how much a credit card can do for you, especially as a college student! I've learned so much since getting my first card, and I want to dive deeper into how you can really maximize cards like the Discover It card and Capital One Savor One credit card to your advantage. It’s not just about spending; it’s about smart financial planning for your future. Let's talk more about the Capital One SavorOne Student Card. Beyond just getting 3% cash back on groceries, dining, and streaming, think about how this fits into your daily student life. Are you subscribed to multiple streaming services for study breaks? That’s automatic cash back! Do you and your roommates often order takeout or grab coffee? Use your SavorOne, and you’re essentially getting a small discount on every meal. And for those bigger moments, like concert tickets or sporting events, getting that 8% cash back on entertainment is a huge win. The Capital One SavorOne credit card design itself is also sleek and modern, which might seem minor, but it's nice to carry a card that feels good in your wallet. Remember, even with these great rewards, the key is paying off your balance in full each month. It’s what helps you build a strong credit history without accumulating debt. Then there's the Discover It Student Cash Back card, a true gem for beginners. Everyone talks about the 5% cash back on rotating categories, but how do you actually make the most of it? Discover usually announces the categories a quarter in advance. My tip? Look at the upcoming categories and plan your bigger purchases around them. For instance, if gas stations are a 5% category, maybe you fill up more often or plan a road trip. If online shopping is featured, that’s the perfect time to buy textbooks or clothes you’ve been eyeing. And don’t forget that fantastic cash back match at the end of your first year – it’s like getting a bonus check just for using your card responsibly! It truly doubles all the cash back you've earned, making it incredibly rewarding for students just starting out. Moving beyond specific cards, let's talk about the broader picture of using credit cards in college. Getting your first credit card for college isn't just a right of passage; it’s a strategic move. When you apply, make sure you understand the terms, especially interest rates and fees. Many student cards don’t have annual fees, which is ideal. Focus on building a positive payment history. Lenders and landlords look at this, so demonstrating you can handle credit responsibly will open doors later on for things like renting your first apartment or securing a car loan. My personal rule of thumb is to treat my credit card like a debit card – only spend what I can immediately pay back. This simple habit has saved me from potential debt traps. And finally, those essential APPS TO USE for managing your finances. I can’t stress enough how helpful the Discover and Capital One apps are for tracking your rewards and spending. You can set up alerts for transactions, view your statements, and even pay your bill right from your phone. Beyond that, SoFi isn't just about high-yield savings; they also offer budgeting tools and sometimes even student loan refinancing options. It’s a great platform to consolidate your financial life and watch your money grow. And Credit Karma? It's more than just checking your score. Use it to keep an eye on your credit reports for any suspicious activity, and explore their recommendations for other financial products. Just remember to do your own research before applying for anything new. These apps empower you to be proactive and informed about your financial health, which is invaluable as a student.
