DIY Pom Pom
YouTube definitely makes it look easier that it was at first lol. I have gotten the hang of it and it’s really not that hard, just time consuming.
I got the materials on Amazon and it was much cheaper to DIY than purchase them premade.
• cut the tulle to whatever length you want
• layer the tulle about 6-7 layers (more layers, darker the color)
• fold the tulle flip flop motion
• cut ribbon to tie around folded tulle
• pull folds of tulle apart
Okay, so I totally get it if you’ve watched a YouTube tutorial for pom-poms and thought, 'There's no way I can do that!' I felt the exact same way at first. But trust me, once you get the knack, making your own fluffy tulle pom poms is not just easy, it's incredibly satisfying and a huge money-saver. I mean, why pay a fortune for pre-made decor when you can whip up something even cuter yourself? My absolute favorite thing about this DIY is how customizable it is, especially when you want to make mini pom poms. The core technique is simple: layered tulle, folded, tied, and fluffed. But to get those adorable tiny ones, you just need to adjust your starting material size. Instead of cutting long strips, I go for shorter, narrower pieces of tulle – think maybe 2-3 inches wide and 6-8 inches long, depending on how tiny you want them. You can even wrap the tulle around the tines of a fork for really minuscule ones! The key is still layering; more layers mean a fuller, darker color, so experiment to get your desired look. Beyond tulle, which gives such a lovely ethereal shimmer, I've also experimented with yarn for a cozier feel or even tissue paper for super lightweight, budget-friendly options. For yarn pom poms, you can get those handy little pom-pom makers, but honestly, wrapping around your fingers or a piece of cardboard works just as well for varying sizes. Once you’ve tied your folded material tightly in the middle with a strong ribbon or thread, the magic happens when you start pulling those folded loops apart. Don't be shy! Really separate each layer to give it maximum fluff. This is where your pom-pom really comes to life. After fluffing, a little trim with sharp scissors can help shape it into a perfect sphere and get rid of any uneven strands. It's like giving your pom-pom a little haircut! I've learned a few tricks along the way. If your pom-pom looks a bit flat, it probably needs more layers of material or more vigorous fluffing. If it's too dense, you might have used too many layers for the size you’re aiming for. It’s all about practice. These little beauties are so versatile! I’ve used them for everything from babysprinkle decorations (they look incredible strung into garlands!) to jazzing up gift wrapping, adding a playful touch to hair clips, or even as charming keychains. They can instantly elevate any party decor or craft project. And if you’re like me and love sharing your DIY journey, you might even consider making a quick video tutorial using an app like InShot – it’s a fun way to document your creations and inspire others. Who knew a simple DIY could bring so much joy and creative possibility? Give it a try, you won't regret it!
