Come with me to my patch testing appointment:

Today I didn’t know I’d be getting series of allergy patch tests done to help figure out what my body might be reacting to. Patch testing is when allergists place small adhesive patches on your back, each one containing a tiny amount of different common allergens things found in skincare, soaps, lotions, fragrances, and other everyday products.

These patches stay on your skin for about 3 days, and during that time you can’t get them wet, or sweat. After a few days, they check your skin’s reaction to see if anything causes irritation or an allergic response.

I started this process after experiencing a random anaphylactic reaction a few months ago with no clear trigger, along with ongoing rashes on my face, neck, and hands. My food allergy tests (blood work and skin prick tests) came back negative, so now we’re looking into contact allergies instead.

I didn’t even know this type of testing existed until now, so I’m sharing it in case someone else is also dealing with unexplained symptoms and trying to figure out where to start.

... Read moreWhen I started experiencing unexplained anaphylactic reactions and persistent rashes on my face, neck, and hands, I was desperate to find answers. After traditional food allergy tests, including blood work and skin prick tests, showed no results, my doctor suggested exploring contact allergies through patch testing—a method I hadn’t even heard of before. During my patch testing appointment, small adhesive patches containing tiny amounts of common allergens found in everyday products like skincare items, soaps, lotions, and fragrances were applied to my back. I had to keep them dry and avoid sweating for about three days, which was challenging but necessary to ensure accurate results. What surprised me most was how many hidden allergens might be lurking in products I used daily without suspicion. Even though it’s a slow process, the test provided valuable insights into potential irritants I hadn’t considered, helping to narrow down what might be causing my skin issues. This experience made me more aware of ingredient labels and the importance of patch testing, especially for anyone dealing with chronic skin problems or unexplained allergic reactions. If you’re facing similar symptoms and standard allergy tests haven’t provided answers, I recommend discussing patch testing with your allergist. It’s a helpful step toward identifying contact allergens and managing your condition effectively. Understanding these reactions has empowered me to make informed choices about the products I use, improving my skin health and overall comfort.
