Maps Are My Villain Origin Story
You know what grinds my gears? Maps. Old-school, pre-Google, pre-blue-dot-on-your-phone maps. The ones that expected you to somehow know where you were in order to figure out where you were going. What kind of mind game is that?
Following a map in the 20th century felt like being thrown into an escape room with no clues and a ticking clock. North? South? I’m just trying to not drive into a ditch. And God forbid the map had a tear or coffee stain right over the one highway you actually needed. You’d be squinting at county lines like your life depended on it—because it kinda did.
And asking for directions? A whole other nightmare. You’d pull into a gas station, heart pounding, and the guy behind the counter would be like, “You’re gonna wanna take a left where the old barn used to be, then a right after the big oak tree, but not the first oak—you’ll know it when you see it.”
WILL I, though?? WILL I??
Maps didn’t help me navigate—they helped me spiral.
So please if you have any advice other than using Apple Maps, to help me get better at navigating please dish immediately!! Your girl needs to know how to read a map and lol how to fold one up too!!

Maps have evolved dramatically over the years, from complex paper versions to reliance on technology like Google Maps and Apple Maps. Yet, many still struggle with navigation. The experience of deciphering a paper map in an unfamiliar area can be frustrating, especially when faced with vague directions or the potential of missing landmarks. This difficulty is not just a personal issue; countless individuals share the same concern, particularly those transitioning from digital navigation back to traditional methods. Understanding map symbols and landmarks is essential for alleviating confusion. Engage with local navigational tips, such as familiarizing yourself with common symbols—like contour lines that indicate elevation changes or icons for services like gas stations. When asking for directions, clarity and specificity are paramount; for example, mention recognizable landmarks to guide you better than vague directions. Additionally, consider practicing with maps in familiar environments to build confidence and skills before approaching more challenging navigation scenarios. As maps become less common, the knowledge of how to read and utilize them can empower you in situations where technology might fail. By sharing experiences and learning from each other, we can foster a community that appreciates both the nostalgia and practicality of map reading.
Despite all of our electronic gadgets, map reading is still a good skill to have. For some people it seems to come as naturally as breathing, for others, not so much. I am one of the former. It will take some practice. First read the legend to learn what the various symbols mean. Remember that usually, north is at the top. Turn the map such that the direction you are facing is at the top of the page. The first area you should look at is an area that you are very familiar with. That will let you see how the map represents roads and features you know. When you are comfortable with that, look at some areas you are vaguely familiar with. When you are comfortable with that step, look at areas you know nothing about. Look for patterns in the way streets are laid out and the names/numbers the streets have. There is a pattern to the numbering of interstates. Interstates going mostly north/south have odd numbers, with the lowest numbers in the west, and interstates going mostly east/west have even numbers, with the lowest numbers in the south. Three digit interstates are shorter routes that branch from a longer route, and the last two digits match the digits of the route from which it branches. In my area, we have I-64, which goes between Chesapeake, VA and St Louis, MO. We have I-264 which goes from Chesapeake (the eastern end of I-64 to the Virginia Beach oceanfront. We have I-564 which goes from I-64 in Norfolk to Naval Station Norfolk. We have I-664 which goes from Chesapeake (the eastern end of I-64) to I-64 in Hampton, providing another crossing of the James River. Interstate I-95 goes from Miami to the Canadian border near Houlton, ME. US highways are numbered similarly to interstates. The even numbered routes run east/west, except the lowest numbers are in the north. The odd numbered routes run north/south, except the lowest numbers are in the east. I hope this has helped.
