Ummm real feel -60???? Excuse me????
Minnesota, I’m so over this. Counting down the days until I can start my mornings with a sunrise run again.
Living through Minnesota's brutally cold winters when the real feel hits around -60°F can be incredibly challenging, especially for outdoor enthusiasts who love running. From personal experience, the key to surviving and staying active is proper preparation and mindset. Layering is absolutely essential. I always start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from my skin, then add insulating thermal layers, and finally a windproof outer jacket. Don't underestimate the importance of a warm hat, gloves, and face protection—exposed skin can freeze quickly at such low temperatures. Warming up indoors before heading out helps reduce the shock to your muscles. I usually do dynamic stretches or light cardio for 5-10 minutes. When running, shorter routes that keep you close to home can be safer in case conditions worsen. Mental strength is just as critical. It’s easy to feel demotivated when facing such extreme cold, but focusing on the goal—like enjoying the sunrise or maintaining consistency—helps push through. Using a headlamp or light-up gear can improve visibility during dark mornings. Remember to check the weather and wind chill frequently, and be willing to adjust your plans if it becomes too dangerous. Listening to your body is key; frostbite and hypothermia risks increase rapidly in these conditions. Although I miss warmer morning runs, embracing winter running with these precautions has helped me stay healthy and positive until we all can enjoy those fresh, cold sunrise runs again.
