We believers obey God. We don’t obey the law though. We are dead to the law (Galatians 2:19). We obey the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:18).
Now, and this is what legalism fails to grasp, the Holy Spirit, the giver and writer of the law, resides within us. He would never lead us to do that which is wrong. SO, if we have the Holy Spirit, what further need do we have for the law Moses brought to tell us what is right and what is wrong (John 1:17)??
Jesus said that if he goes away, the Holy Spirit would come. He also said that the Holy Spirit would lead us into all the truth (John 16:13).
We believers receive the Holy Spirit. We need to walk in faith believing that what Jesus told us is true.
From my personal journey in faith, I’ve discovered that trusting the Holy Spirit as our guide deeply transforms the way we live daily. Unlike following strict legalism, which can feel burdensome, walking by the Spirit brings a sense of freedom and assurance. The Holy Spirit acts as an inner compass, gently guiding us toward what is right without the rigidity of the old law. One practical way I experience this is through prayer and reflection. When faced with difficult decisions, instead of merely relying on rules, I invite the Spirit to lead me. This spiritual sensitivity often aligns perfectly with the values Jesus taught—showing love, grace, and truth. It builds a relationship that goes beyond obligation and rules and moves toward heartfelt obedience. Moreover, understanding that "we are dead to the law" (Galatians 2:19) gave me new hope. It means the harsh judgment and fear of failing the law’s demands no longer define us. Instead, the Holy Spirit—which Jesus promised would come (John 16:13)—lives in us and empowers us to live rightly from the heart. This inward guidance also supports growth in faith, helping us 'walk in faith believing' as the article notes. Embracing this dynamic relationship frees us from legalism and encourages a personal, authentic faith journey where grace abounds, and truth unfolds naturally.
