Make Critical Thinking Cool Again

Since when did anti-intellectualism become "cool"? And why?

The founders of the world's democracies understood something important:

that it's impossible to govern democratically - impossible for the people to rule themselves -

without intellectualism and education.

But can we take a moment also to understand why anti-intellectualism has become so attractive?

In a very real sense, it's the fault of the intellectuals themselves.

Academia, especially, has created a culture that feels "exclusive" and "elite".

As if you couldn't have a valid insight or idea unless you got 2 PhDs or were the summa cum laude of your class (of course, those things are also great to have!)

And when people feel excluded, they rebel against that culture.

The best kind of education - the best kind of intellectualism - has always happened for me, itself, democratically.

My best education has come from conversations with friends, long hours of pouring myself into debates, from professors and mentors who empowered me by asking me “What do you think about that?” And then by holding me accountable to prove it.

The most magical thing happens when the mind is simultaneously left free to explore yet is held to high standards of evidence.

My mission is to re-create this culture of learning - “make critical thinking cool again”.

If you're on this mission too, then check out my Critical Thinking Academy at the link in my bio!

... Read moreIn today's society, critical thinking is more vital than ever. As we encounter an overload of information through digital platforms, the ability to analyze and evaluate claims is crucial. This has become especially evident in political discourse, where misinformation often prevails. Re-establishing a culture that values intellectualism can begin with simple practices like fostering discussions that welcome diverse perspectives. By encouraging open dialogue, we empower individuals to voice their ideas and challenge assumptions, creating a community committed to critical thought. Educational initiatives can also play a pivotal role. Schools, colleges, and even online platforms can integrate critical thinking skills into their curriculums, providing participants the tools to navigate complex issues. Moreover, media literacy is an essential skill set that should be a part of every educational framework. As we teach individuals how to decode news articles, identify biases, and examine sources, we contribute to a more informed populace capable of engaging with societal challenges constructively. Ultimately, making critical thinking 'cool' again involves celebrating the beauty of questioning and the power of informed opinions. By reversing the trend of anti-intellectualism, we can create spaces where ideas thrive, and individuals feel validated, valued, and motivated to think deeply.
