... Read moreOh my goodness, I just had to share more about my incredible day at Bloom Hill Dahlia Festival! If you've ever dreamt of being surrounded by a sea of vibrant, colorful blooms, this is the place to be. It was truly a pick-your-own paradise, and I learned so much about creating the perfect dahlia bouquet. First off, planning your visit is key. I'd recommend going on a sunny day, just like when I went. The light makes all those gorgeous dahlias pop even more! When you arrive at a farm like Bloom Hill, you'll usually get a container – for me, it was a 'STANDARD CUP' that held about '5 DAHLIAS', but I ended up upgrading for a bigger haul because I couldn't resist. They often provide clippers, but you can bring your own sharp ones if you prefer. Now, for the fun part: picking! It's not just about grabbing any flower. I looked for dahlias that were mostly open but still firm, without any browning on the petals. Make sure to cut the stem long, right above a leaf node, to encourage more blooms for the plant. I loved discovering all the different varieties – from classic dinner plate dahlias to pompons and decorative types. Mixing them with other colorful flowers like celosia and marigolds (which I definitely added to my bouquet!) makes for an even more dynamic arrangement. The OCR even caught a vibrant mix in my bouquet, proving that variety is the spice of life, even in flowers! After you've got your beautiful collection, how do you make that dahlia cut flower bouquet last? As soon as I got home, I re-cut the stems at an angle under water and removed any leaves that would fall below the waterline in my vase. This helps them drink better. Changing the water daily and keeping them out of direct sunlight will significantly extend their vase life. My colorful blooms are still looking fresh days later! For those who are inspired to grow their own, creating a dahlia container garden is surprisingly rewarding. You can find dahlia tubers in spring and plant them in large pots with good drainage and rich soil. Even if you don't have a huge garden, you can still enjoy these stunning flowers on your patio or balcony. It's a wonderful way to have your own source of colorful blooms right at home! And a little tip for your visit: wear comfy shoes and maybe a hat, as you'll be walking through fields. I wore a simple black dress, as spotted in the OCR, which was perfect for a sunny day. And don't forget to check out any local vendors or food trucks – I even spotted some 'UNCLE BACON'S BBQ' which smelled amazing! It really adds to the whole festival experience. Picking flowers at Bloom Hill was more than just gathering a bouquet; it was an immersive experience in a blooming beautiful flower farm. I can't wait to go back!
