I prefer the term VETpenda 🇺🇸
Navigating the unique world of military life often comes with its own set of terminology, some empowering, some less so. When you hear terms flying around, whether it's 'dependa' or something else entirely, it's crucial to understand the context and impact. For many military spouses, the word 'dependa' is a loaded one, often used to diminish their contributions and define them solely by their spouse's service. From my perspective as a military spouse, this stereotype is incredibly frustrating. I’ve seen the questions pop up, just like in the OCR: "People: You're the reason in the military?" or "People: he has BAH? Have health insurance?" These questions often carry an underlying assumption that being a military spouse is a life of leisure, solely benefiting from a service member's pay and perks. It completely ignores the immense sacrifices and resilience required to navigate constant moves, solo parenting during deployments, career instability, and the emotional toll of military life. The truth is, military spouses are far from just 'dependas.' We are the backbone of our military families and communities. We manage households through deployments, often becoming single parents overnight. We juggle our own careers, sometimes starting over every few years in a new state or country. We build new support networks from scratch, volunteer countless hours, and provide unwavering emotional support to our service members, who are often facing incredible stress and danger. The BAH (Basic Allowance for Housing) and health insurance aren't handouts; they are essential benefits that enable service members to focus on their duties, knowing their families are cared for. These are benefits earned through service, and spouses often bear the burden of managing the complex healthcare system and finding suitable housing. This is why I, and many others, prefer a term that truly reflects our strength and active role. Phrases like 'VETpenda' or 'MilSpouse' aim to reclaim our narrative and highlight the partnership, dedication, and active support we provide, not just to our service members, but to the veteran community as a whole. It's about being an advocate, a partner, and a pillar of strength, rather than just a passive recipient of benefits. It's about recognizing that we are an integral part of the military ecosystem, contributing significantly to the readiness and well-being of our armed forces. If you're a military spouse or partner, remember your value. Your sacrifices, resilience, and unwavering support are invaluable. Don't let stereotypes define you. Embrace your strength, connect with others who understand, and continue to champion the true spirit of military families. It's a POV that truly celebrates our essential role, debunking any outdated or demeaning labels.
