Switched from tracking film to vellum!

Sulphur Rock
2025/1/18 Edited to

... Read moreHey fellow leather enthusiasts! You might have seen my quick post about making the switch from tracking film to vellum for my leather tooling patterns. I wanted to dive a bit deeper into why this change has been such a game-changer for me and offer some advice if you're considering it too. Initially, like many of you, I started with tracking film. It seemed like the standard, and it worked, mostly. But I often found myself struggling with a few things. The film could be a bit slippery, and sometimes getting a precise, clear transfer onto the leather was a challenge. There were moments when I’d press a little too hard, or not hard enough, and the design wouldn't come out as crisp as I wanted. This meant more re-work, more frustration, and sometimes even starting over on a piece of leather I'd already spent time preparing. Then, a friend in the leather crafting community suggested vellum. I was skeptical at first – would it really make a difference? But after trying it out, I was genuinely impressed. Vellum has a slightly textured surface, which makes it much easier to hold in place on your leather. This subtle grip significantly reduces slippage, giving you more control over your stenciling or tracing. One of the biggest advantages I've found is how beautifully vellum handles moisture and pressure. When you're tooling, you often need to dampen your leather. Vellum doesn't warp or buckle like some thinner papers or films might. It holds up excellently, allowing for a much cleaner and more consistent transfer of your pattern. The lines I get are sharper, clearer, and more defined, which makes the actual tooling process so much smoother. I feel like my final pieces have a much more professional finish now. For anyone looking to make the switch, here are a few tips from my own experience: Preparation is Key: Just like with any pattern transfer, ensure your leather is properly cased (dampened) before laying down your vellum. A consistent moisture level helps the vellum transfer ink or graphite smoothly. Secure Your Pattern: Even though vellum has a better grip, I still recommend using a bit of masking tape to secure the edges of your vellum pattern to your leather. This prevents any accidental shifts while you're tracing. Choose Your Tool Wisely: I’ve had great success using a fine-tipped stylus or even a dull pencil for tracing. The goal isn't to cut the vellum, but to create enough pressure to impress the pattern onto the cased leather. Experiment a little to find what works best for your specific vellum and leather thickness. Practice on Scraps: Before committing to a large project, always do a test transfer on a scrap piece of leather. This helps you gauge the right amount of pressure and ensures your pattern will transfer clearly. Compared to tracking film, vellum feels more robust and forgiving. While tracking film is transparent and good for precise alignment over existing designs, vellum’s slightly opaque quality still allows enough visibility for placement, and its other benefits far outweigh that minor difference for me. It’s also generally more durable and less prone to tearing during the transfer process. If you're in leathercraft, especially if you do a lot of meticulous tooling, I highly recommend giving vellum a try. It might just be the upgrade your workflow needs! Happy crafting!
