Snowboarding
In Australia
Hey snow lovers! If you're like me and just getting into snowboarding, or you're past the bunny slopes but not quite ready for double black diamonds, finding the right spot in Australia is key! I remember my first few trips, feeling a bit lost trying to figure out where to go. You don't want to just end up at any old ski resort, especially if it's too advanced or doesn't have good facilities for learning. Based on my own experiences and what I’ve learned from fellow riders, here are my top picks for the best snowboarding parks for beginners and intermediates in Australia. Perisher, NSW: A Beginner's Dream and Intermediate Playground Perisher is often my go-to recommendation, especially for beginners. It's the largest snow resort in the Southern Hemisphere, which means plenty of space! For beginners, areas like Smiggin Holes are perfect – wide, gentle slopes, dedicated magic carpets, and excellent ski schools. I found it so reassuring to have such a clear, safe space to practice turns without worrying about faster riders. Once you’ve got the basics down, Perisher offers a fantastic progression for intermediates. Their terrain parks, like the Front Valley Park or Yabby Flat Park, have smaller features and jumps that are great for building confidence before tackling bigger obstacles. Plus, the sheer variety of blue runs means you can explore different areas and truly find your flow. Thredbo, NSW: Long Runs and Progressive Terrain Thredbo has a special place in my heart for its incredibly long runs. For intermediates, this is a huge plus – you get more time to carve and enjoy the descent without constantly stopping for lifts. Beginners are well catered for too, with dedicated learning areas like Friday Flat. This zone has a gentle gradient, covered magic carpets, and a fantastic ski school. I've heard so many success stories from friends who learned here! What I love about Thredbo for intermediates is the progression. You can start on the longer, wide blue runs and gradually challenge yourself on slightly steeper sections or easy-entry tree runs. The vibe is also super lively, which adds to the whole experience. Falls Creek, VIC: Family-Friendly and Flowy Runs For those venturing into Victoria, Falls Creek is an absolute gem, especially if you're looking for a ski resort with a relaxed, village atmosphere. It's known for being very family-friendly, and that extends to its terrain. Beginners have access to huge, open learning areas like Wombat's Ramble, which is famously Australia's longest green run – perfect for practicing those long, sweeping turns. As an intermediate, I really appreciate the flowy blue runs that weave through the gum trees. They're not too challenging but offer enough variety to keep things interesting. The terrain parks here also have a great mix of features, from small boxes to medium jumps, ideal for intermediates looking to try out freestyle without too much pressure. Mount Buller, VIC: Close to the City with Diverse Options If you're based in Melbourne and looking for a convenient weekend escape, Mount Buller is your best bet. Despite being closer to the city, it still offers a great range of terrain for all levels. For beginners, the Bourke Street Express area provides wide, gentle slopes and excellent instruction. I’ve personally found their lessons to be top-notch, really helping to iron out bad habits early on. Intermediates will enjoy the variety of blue runs across the mountain, from the wide open expanses of the Southern Slopes to the more sheltered runs through the trees. They also have a couple of terrain parks with features suitable for intermediates to hone their skills. It’s a fantastic all-rounder if you're planning shorter trips. When you're planning your trip, remember to check snow conditions, book lessons in advance, and make sure your gear is suitable. Don't just ask for advice and end up at a ski resort that doesn't match your skill level – do a little research to ensure you get the most out of your Australian snowboarding adventure!
