Delicious Texas Style French Onion Soup

Delicious French Onion Soup with a Texas Twist!

Recipe!

4-5 yellow onions

3 Cloves of garlic

1/4 cup whiskey

1tsp Worcestershire

Salt and pepper to taste

1-2 lbs of beef (I used meaty stew bones, you can use short ribs, chuck roast, stew meat)

4-8 cups beef broth (enough to cover your meat)

Toasted bread (sourdough, a baguette, French loaf)

Gruyere cheese

Thinly slice onions and sauté in olive oil. Keep your stove on medium heat, take your time with this, do not burn the onions. Deglaze the pan with the whiskey. Add in Worcestershire, salt, pepper, and beef. Pour enough broth in to cover your meat, less if you want it thicker, more for a thinner soup. Place into the oven on 300 for 3 hours. With lid on your Dutch oven! Remove from oven, shred meat, remove bones if there are any, top with toasted bread and cheese. Place into the oven on 425 for 5-10 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly. Sever and enjoy!

What I love most about this recipe is how the addition of whiskey enhances the caramelized onions, infusing a subtle smoky sweetness that balances beautifully with the savory beef broth. From my experience, using a mix of meaty stew bones and chuck roast gives the soup extra depth and richness. Slow-cooking the beef in the broth for several hours not only tenderizes the meat but also intensifies the savory flavors. It’s important to keep your onions gently sautéed until golden brown but not burnt—this step is key for a deep, sweet base. Topping the soup with toasted sourdough or French bread adds texture, and the Gruyere cheese melts perfectly to create a luscious, bubbly crust when broiled. For those wanting an authentic Texas flair, the whiskey choice matters—opt for a smooth bourbon to complement the other ingredients without overpowering. This recipe is versatile and forgiving, allowing adjustments to the broth thickness and type of beef used. It’s also a fantastic dish to prepare ahead of time, as flavors meld beautifully when reheated. Pair this rich French Onion Soup with a fresh green salad or roasted vegetables for a well-rounded meal. Incorporating the essence of Texas in a traditionally French recipe results in a hearty, satisfying soup that’s perfect for chilly evenings or entertaining guests. Whether you’re a novice or an experienced cook, this Texas French Onion Soup can become a cherished staple in your recipe collection.
