Project 1- Found these bad boys for $1.25, and they were in rough shape! Researched a bit about leather repair and discovered leather putty, it was a learning experience but Iâm happy with the results! Added a little paint, polish, patches, silver studs &&& tada!!!
Upcycling leather items has become a rewarding hobby for me, especially with the unique Western style that adds character to fashion pieces. When I started, I found an old pair of leather boots in poor condition for just $1.25, which sparked my interest in leather repair. After some research, I discovered leather putty as an effective material to fill cracks and holes. What I loved about using leather putty is how it adheres well and allows for sanding after drying, creating a smooth surface for painting and polishing. Adding paint and patches brought a personalized touch to the boots, while silver studs enhanced the funky, country aesthetic that I aimed for. The process was a bit of trial and error, but seeing the transformation was incredibly satisfying. Apart from boots, this technique can be applied to jackets, bags, or beltsâall perfect substrates for a Western DIY makeover. One tip Iâd share is to test your paint colors on a scrap piece first to ensure they complement the leather tone. Additionally, maintaining flexibility in the leather after repair is crucial, so avoid applying too much putty in one area to prevent stiffness. The "YOU DO YOU" phrase from my project images reminds me to embrace creativity and individuality when customizing fashion. Participating in the upcycle movement not only saves money but also contributes to sustainability by reducing waste. If youâre passionate about country style or want to refresh old leather goods, consider trying out these DIY techniques. Theyâre cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and give you a one-of-a-kind look that celebrates both funk and tradition. Keep on truckinâ with your DIY Western fashion adventuresâyou might surprise yourself with what you can create!
