Realistic BLW
A few meals we’ve had recently! Our favorite foods right now are clementines and a good hunk of a pork roast or chop! #blw #realistic #sahm #babyledweaning #food
Dinner time with an 8-month-old can feel like a whole new adventure, right? After a busy day, sometimes the last thing I want to do is come up with elaborate meals for my little one. But I've found a few tricks and go-to dishes that make it realistic and, dare I say, enjoyable for both of us! My goal is always to offer nutrient-dense options that are easy for tiny hands to manage, minimizing choking hazards while still exploring textures and tastes. One of our recent favorites, inspired by my desire to sneak in more veggies, has been Strawberry Yogurt Spinach Bites. They sound fancy, but they're surprisingly simple! I blend a handful of fresh spinach with unflavored whole milk yogurt and a few mashed strawberries, then bake them into soft, bite-sized muffins or even just drop spoonfuls onto a baking sheet to make soft 'pancakes'. These are perfect for those pincer grasp practice sessions and pack a punch of iron and vitamins. When it comes to protein, we love getting creative. You might have seen our mention of Fried Lobster Balls, which, when prepared correctly, can be a great way to introduce seafood! I always ensure they're soft enough to mash easily between my fingers and cut into appropriate shapes – usually strips or small, quartered pieces – to reduce any choking risk. For a simpler take, I often do little fish cakes made with canned salmon (bones removed!) mixed with a bit of sweet potato. Chicken Tacos are another adaptable family meal. Instead of a full taco, I’ll offer shredded, plain taco-seasoned chicken, soft tortilla strips (cut into finger-length pieces), a dollop of plain yogurt or sour cream, and a tiny bit of mild salsa or mashed avocado. It's all about deconstructing the meal into baby-safe components. And for something heartier, our Garlic Bread Pork Roast with Sweet Corn is a hit. I make sure the pork is super tender and cut into thin, finger-sized strips or shredded. For the 'garlic bread' part, I use a soft piece of bread, lightly toasted and spread with a tiny bit of unsalted butter and a whisper of garlic powder – no hard crusts! Sweet corn, of course, is always a winner and easy for them to self-feed. Beyond specific recipes, here are my top tips for stress-free 8-month-old dinners: Focus on Iron-Rich Foods: At this age, their iron stores from birth are depleting, so make sure to offer iron-fortified cereals, pureed meats, beans, or lentils frequently. Texture is Key: Foods should be soft enough to smush between your gums or easily mash. Think steamed veggies, soft fruits, and well-cooked grains. Embrace the Mess: BLW is inherently messy, especially at dinner when they might be tired. A splat mat and a good bib are your best friends! Listen to Cues: They might not eat a lot every night, and that's okay. Milk/formula is still their primary nutrition source. Family Meals: Try to offer a deconstructed version of what you're eating. It saves time and encourages them to mimic your eating habits. Remember, every baby's eating journey is unique. Don't stress too much about perfection; focus on offering a variety of healthy, safe options and enjoying this precious time.
