I'm still absolutely buzzing about how my latest DIY turned out – those gorgeous iced coffee candles, perfectly replicating my favorite vanilla oat milk shaken espresso! If you've ever dreamt of filling your home with the cozy, comforting aroma of your beloved coffee shop, then you absolutely have to try making these. It's not just a candle; it's a little piece of art that smells divine and brings so much joy. Trust me, it's a super rewarding project, and easier than you might think! So, ready to dive into making your very own 'iced coffee' masterpiece? Here's how I did it: What You'll Need (My Go-To Supplies!): Soy Wax Flakes: I prefer soy wax because it's natural and burns cleaner. You'll need enough to fill your chosen containers. Candle Wicks: Pre-tabbed wicks are easiest. Make sure they're appropriate for your container size to ensure an even burn. Fragrance Oil: This is where the magic happens! I used a blend of coffee, vanilla, and a hint of oat milk fragrance oils to get that perfect "shaken espresso" vibe. You can find these at most craft stores or online. Heat-Safe Pouring Pitcher & Double Boiler: Safety first! Never melt wax directly over high heat. Thermometer: Crucial for adding fragrance at the right temperature. Stirring Utensil: A dedicated stirring stick or spoon. Containers: This is fun! I used clear glass jars that looked like little iced coffee cups. Small mason jars or even upcycled coffee mugs work wonderfully. Wick Centering Tools: Clothespins or specialized wick holders. Optional for the 'Iced' Look: Smaller wax flakes or clear gel wax to create faux ice cubes, or even some whipped wax for a 'foam' topping! Dark liquid candle dye (optional): To create the layered coffee look. My Step-by-Step DIY Iced Coffee Candle Journey: Prep Your Containers & Wicks: First, clean your containers thoroughly. Then, secure your wick to the bottom center of each container using a dab of hot glue or a wick sticker. Use your wick centering tool to keep it upright and centered. Melt the Wax: Set up your double boiler. Add your soy wax flakes to the pouring pitcher and place it in the double boiler. Heat slowly until the wax is fully melted and clear. Stir occasionally. Add Your Signature Scent: Once melted, remove the wax from the heat. Let it cool down to about 180-185°F (check your fragrance oil's flashpoint for specifics, but this is a good general range). Now, add your fragrance oils! For my vanilla oat milk shaken espresso scent, I started with a generous amount of coffee, then added vanilla, and just a touch of oat milk. Stir gently for at least 2 minutes to ensure the fragrance oil binds with the wax. Create the 'Coffee' Layer (Optional): If you want that layered look, this is where you'd add a few drops of dark liquid candle dye to a portion of your scented wax. Pour this darker wax into your prepped containers, filling about 2/3 of the way. Let it cool and harden completely – this might take a few hours. The 'Oat Milk' Layer: Once the first layer is solid, reheat any remaining scented wax (without dye) or melt a fresh batch. Let it cool to the right temperature again, and pour it over your hardened 'coffee' layer, filling the rest of the container. The 'Ice' & 'Foam' Topping (My Favorite Part!): After your candle has mostly hardened but is still slightly soft (after an hour or two), you can get creative! For Ice Cubes: I used small, irregular wax melts (sometimes I even melt a bit of clear gel wax and let it set in random shapes) and carefully placed them on top. For Foam: You can whip up some slightly cooled wax with a fork to create a fluffy 'foam' texture and top your candle with it. A sprinkle of real (unused!) coffee grounds can add a super realistic touch, but be mindful that it can affect the burn. Curing Time is Key: This is the hardest part – patience! Let your candles cure for at least 24-48 hours, but ideally 1-2 weeks. This allows the fragrance to fully bind and strengthen, giving you the best scent throw when you finally light it. Trim Your Wick: Before lighting, always trim your wick to about 1/4 inch. Seeing these beautiful, fragrant candles sitting on my counter, smelling just like my favorite coffee, makes all the effort absolutely worth it.
