Self-Portraits
It took me a while to feel comfortable not only taking, but sharing self-portarits for a creative purpose online. Here are some things that helped me get past the mental block:
1. You don't need a plan.
Sure, a plan can help you get moving and maybe complete your photoshoot faster, but I would often find myself getting too wrapped up in the plan, so much so I could never actually start taking photos. If this is you, don't force it.
2. There's no pressure.
It is just you and your camera. There are no clients, deadlines, or sense of urgency. If you are stressing yourself out, or are feeling pressure, that takes away from the creative time you are giving yourself. Make sure you're somewhere you can be comfortable.
3. It's okay if they don't turn out.
As disappointing as this can be, don't kick yourself over it. It is about trial and error, finding what works and what doesn't.
4. Don't forget who you are taking your photos for!
A lot of the time, self portraits are about self reflection. Are the photos you are taking for you? For Instagram? For lemon 8?
