Silly Tia

Oh, Tia! My little leopard gecko, with her striking yellow and black spots, has truly redefined what 'silly' means in our home. Every day brings a new chuckle, whether she's dramatically flopping onto her warm hide for a nap, or giving me the most intense 'side-eye' when I dare to disturb her sunbathing. She's not just a pet; she's a tiny, scaly comedian! Sometimes I hold her gently in my hand, and she'll just stare out with this curious, almost bewildered expression that makes my heart melt. She’ll often do this slow, deliberate head tilt as if she’s trying to understand the mysteries of the universe from her perch. It’s absolutely adorable and one of her signature silly moves. I love observing her, and every interaction, like seeing her yellow and black spots up close as she's held, is a delight. One of her funniest habits is her 'hunting dance.' She'll spot a mealworm, freeze, wiggle her tail like a tiny predator, then pounce with exaggerated slowness, often missing the first time, only to try again with even more theatrical flair. It’s a whole production for a single bug! Or when she tries to squeeze into a hide that’s clearly too small, only to realize halfway and back out with a look of pure indignation. And don't even get me started on her 'staring contests' with her reflection – pure gold! Beyond her daily antics, we’ve also been on a little journey of recovery. As mentioned, Tia has been healing from a bad shed, which can be a bit stressful for both of us. It’s a good reminder that even the silliest pets need diligent care. When a leopard gecko has a bad shed, it means pieces of old skin remain stuck, especially on their toes or around their eyes. If not removed carefully, it can lead to health issues like constricted toes or vision problems. It’s important to address it promptly. To help her, I’ve been giving her extra warm, shallow baths, which helps moisten the skin and makes it easier for the old remnants to come off naturally. I also ensure her humid hide is always properly misted, maintaining consistent high humidity in that specific area, as adequate humidity is crucial for a smooth shed. Sometimes, a gentle swipe with a damp cotton swab can help stubborn bits. It’s amazing how much more comfortable and active she becomes once those stubborn bits of skin are gone. A happy gecko is a silly gecko, after all! If your leopard gecko is having trouble shedding, always make sure their environment is correct – proper temperatures (a warm side around 90-92°F and a cool side around 75-80°F), good humidity in their moist hide (70-80%), and a balanced diet with proper supplementation. Sometimes a vet visit is needed if it's severe or persistent, especially if there's swelling or signs of infection. Seeing her bounce back, full of energy and ready for more silly adventures, makes all the effort worth it. Watching her explore, stalk her food, and just exist in her quirky way brings so much joy. She truly is the silliest and most beloved member of our family!
