It's such a joy bringing a new rescue kitten into your home, and one of the first questions that pops into my head is always, 'How old are they really?' Especially with a little one like my current *chubbiest, sleepiest bald baby kitten*, it can be a real guessing game! That shiny forehead and those tiny features make him look so young, but I'm always curious to know more about their development stage. Knowing a kitten's age is super important for their care, whether it's about feeding schedules, vet visits, or understanding what developmental milestones to expect. When you rescue kittens, their exact birth date is often a mystery. So, us rescuers often become amateur detectives, looking for clues to figure out how old these precious babies are. Here are a few things I always check: First, their eyes. Kittens are born with their eyes closed. They usually start to open around 8-12 days old. Initially, they might be a bit squinty, but within a few days, they’ll be fully open. All kittens are born with blue eyes, and their true eye color won't develop until they're about 6-7 weeks old. Next, their ears. They're also born folded down, and they'll start to unfold and stand up around 2-3 weeks of age. A kitten with fully erect ears is usually a bit older. Teeth are probably the most reliable age indicator for young kittens. They usually start getting their tiny incisors (front teeth) around 2-3 weeks old, then canines (fangs) at 3-4 weeks, and premolars by 4-6 weeks. If you can gently open a kitten's mouth and see their teeth, you can get a pretty good estimate. Adult teeth start coming in around 4 months, so if they have any, they're no longer tiny babies! Then there's their mobility and behavior. Newborns can only crawl. By 3 weeks, they start taking wobbly steps. Around 4 weeks, they're usually walking and exploring more confidently. Playfulness really kicks in around 4-5 weeks, and they start learning to groom themselves. My bald baby kitten is already quite mobile, though he prefers to be sleepy and roll around rather than climb! He’s got that super chubby build, which makes his movements extra adorable, but it doesn't necessarily tell me his precise age. It's a challenge, but also a rewarding part of rescue.
