Winter Sunbath & Lunch Time: Stray Cats Enjoy a Warm Afternoon

On a cold winter afternoon, the mountain sun finally comes out, and the stray cats gather together in neat little rows to soak up the warmth. If you've ever seen community cats lounging in places like rural Colorado, Appalachian towns, or even chilly California foothills, this scene will feel very familiar.

With the temperature much lower than in the city, afternoons like this are precious. I brought canned food and water-rich meals to help the cats stay hydrated during winter. Today's menu included goat milk flavor and pumpkin with shredded chicken breast - simple, clean ingredients with no additives, making it safe and comforting for them.

Some cats rushed out as soon as they heard the sound of cans opening, while others stayed curled up in their insulated shelters, enjoying their winter naps. Durian, the yellow long-haired cat, once amazed everyone by eating nonstop for five hours, and today he was just as enthusiastic.

Feeding time isn't just about food. It's about routine, safety, and warmth. In colder climates, whether it's snowy mountain areas or windy coastal regions like parts of Oregon or New England, hydration and wind protection matter just as much as calories. That's why I'm also preparing DIY door curtains using cute cat photo calendars to block cold drafts from the shelters.

As daylight fades earlier in winter, these quiet moments become even more meaningful. Watching them eat, rest, and sunbathe reminds us how small efforts can make a big difference.
