New York is expensive 😂
Okay, so you've seen my 'extreme' measures from the images—yes, sometimes I've literally sat in the dark between clients at my Stretch Pad business just to save a few bucks on electricity! And let’s not even get started on 'borrowing' WiFi or the lengths I've gone to keep the water bill down. Living and running a business in New York City definitely forces you to get creative, and frankly, a little bit ridiculous sometimes. But beyond the laughs, there are real strategies I've learned to truly survive (and even thrive!) in this incredible, yet incredibly expensive, city. First off, let’s tackle the biggest monster: housing. Forget those dreamy apartments you see in movies. For most of us, it’s about finding a roommate (or two, or three!), looking beyond Manhattan, and being ready to act fast. I found my current place in a less-hyped neighborhood, which meant I got more for my money. Websites like StreetEasy, RoomZoom, and even Facebook groups are your best friends. Be prepared to compromise on space, but never on safety. And if you're like me, juggling a small business like *Stretch Pad*, consider if a live-work setup, or even temporarily 'sleeping in the office' (like I joked about in those pics!), could save you a month or two of rent while you get on your feet. Next up, food. Eating out in NYC is a luxury, not an everyday habit, especially when every penny counts for your business. My biggest hack? Meal prepping! Sundays are for cooking big batches of affordable, healthy meals. Think rice and beans, lentil soup, chicken and veggies. Supermarkets like Trader Joe’s, Aldi (if you can find one), and even local ethnic markets offer much better prices than your corner deli. I also make my coffee at home – seriously, that $5 daily latte adds up to over $1000 a year! Transportation is another area where you can save a ton. The subway is your lifeline. A monthly MetroCard is usually more cost-effective than individual rides if you commute regularly. And embrace walking! It’s free, great exercise, and you discover so much more of the city. I’ve probably saved hundreds of dollars just by walking instead of taking a short taxi or even the subway for a few stops. When it comes to utilities and internet, I’ve moved past just 'sitting in the dark' to more practical solutions. Unplugging electronics when not in use, using energy-efficient light bulbs, and being mindful of air conditioning/heating are simple but effective. For internet, if you can find a good deal from providers like Spectrum or Fios, lock it in. And yes, sometimes 'borrowing' WiFi from a coffee shop (with a purchase, of course!) or a friend's place for quick tasks is a lifesaver when your home internet is acting up or you're trying to cut costs. Finally, for fellow small business owners, every penny counts. I constantly look for ways to cut overhead. Do you really need that fancy office space, or can you operate from a co-working space a few days a week, or even from home? Stretch Pad started small, and I’ve learned to be resourceful. Things like using free online tools for scheduling and marketing, negotiating with suppliers, and doing as much as possible yourself before outsourcing are crucial. It's a grind, but seeing your business grow while navigating the NYC landscape is incredibly rewarding. It’s all about finding those clever ways to make your money, and your business, stretch further!
