Doesn’t seem like it 😂
I’ve often noticed situations where people’s words say one thing, but their body language tells a very different story. For instance, someone may say "I’m fine," but their crossed arms, lack of eye contact, or tense posture could suggest otherwise. This mismatch between verbal communication and nonverbal cues is a classic example of incongruence. Body language often reveals our true feelings because it is less consciously controlled than speech. When someone is nervous, uncomfortable, or dishonest, their body tends to give off signals that clash with their words. Recognizing these signs can be incredibly helpful—not only in casual conversations but also in professional and personal relationships. For example, if you are in a meeting and a colleague's tone seems positive but they avoid eye contact or fidget nervously, it might indicate reluctance or disagreement. Similarly, in social settings, noticing inconsistencies between words and gestures can help you better understand underlying emotions. In my experience, becoming more attentive to these cues has improved my communication skills. It encourages asking open-ended questions and creating a space where people feel safe to express their true thoughts. Understanding body language mismatches also helps prevent misunderstandings and builds deeper trust. So, while words are important, paying attention to body language and recognizing when it doesn’t match can give you a more complete picture of communication.
