So, I finally dove into 'War Storm,' the epic conclusion to Victoria Aveyard's Red Queen series, and while I had high hopes, it ended up being a solid 3.5-star read for me. Going into it, I was really invested in Mare's journey and the fate of the kingdoms, especially after all the twists and turns in the previous books. However, I have to admit, the start of ‘War Storm’ felt a bit slow. It took a while for the plot to really pick up momentum, and I found myself wishing for things to accelerate a bit quicker. Once the story got going in the second half, though, it definitely improved. We're talking about a full-blown rebel war, and the stakes felt incredibly high. The political machinations and the constant threat of high treason kept me on the edge of my seat, wondering who to trust. I appreciated the inclusion of multiple POVs, which gave a broader perspective on the conflict and allowed me to connect with more characters across the different factions. Seeing the war unfold from various angles, from the front lines to the royal courts, added a lot of depth. However, this also meant that sometimes the narrative jumped around a bit too much for my liking, occasionally disrupting the flow. The themes of death and sacrifice were ever-present, reminding you of the brutal realities of their world. Speaking of characters, I was excited to see the continued development of the LGBTQ+ characters. It's always great to see such representation in YA fantasy, and I felt it was handled quite naturally within the story's context. My main point of contention, and why it didn't quite hit a higher rating for me, was the ending. Without giving away spoilers, I found it to be somewhat predictable. After all the build-up and the intricate plotlines, I was hoping for something a bit more surprising or impactful. It felt like a safe conclusion rather than a truly groundbreaking one. Despite my criticisms, if you've followed the Red Queen series this far, you'll definitely want to see how Mare Barrow's story concludes. It's still a well-crafted YA fantasy with rich world-building and intriguing power dynamics. It just didn't quite deliver the knockout punch I was anticipating for a series finale. If you're into political intrigue, elemental powers, and a sweeping rebel war, you'll likely still find a lot to enjoy here. Did anyone else find the ending a bit… expected?
