Learning Photography | Visual Diary Pt. 1
I’m teaching myself photography by doing it. These are moments I captured while exploring light, composition, and storytelling. I’m not waiting to be hired to start thinking like a director — I’m learning by producing
Photography is an art form that not only captures moments but also tells stories. In recent years, the accessibility of digital cameras and smartphones has democratized photography, allowing everyone to express their unique perspective. Learning photography involves understanding key concepts such as exposure, composition, and lighting. Exposure, which determines how light or dark the final image will appear, relies on three main elements: aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Mastering these elements allows photographers to create images that evoke emotion and convey their vision effectively. Composition is the arrangement of visual elements within the frame. Applying techniques such as the rule of thirds, leading lines, and framing can greatly enhance the impact of a photograph. Experimenting with different angles and perspectives can also lead to exciting and unexpected results. Lighting is crucial in photography; natural light offers soft, glowing effects, while artificial light can create dramatic contrasts. Understanding how to work with different light sources enhances the overall quality and mood of the images captured. Exploring your creative direction through a visual diary not only helps improve technical skills but also encourages personal growth and storytelling. Keeping a record of your photographic journey allows you to reflect on progress and gain inspiration from past work.
