Wear your SPF!!

As a Licensed Esthetician, many times I get asked what level or what kind of SPF my clients should be using and my answer is simple: It will not matter if you do not re-apply every 2-3 hours.

In short, my preference year round sunscreen is a physical/mineral base that is SPF 50. The numbers are more of a marketing scheme than anything, but you do need to apply as directed. Also, using a stand alone SPF is more effective than one mixed in with a moisturizer or foundation base.

It’s not just a recommendation; it's a fundamental step in protecting your skin, and honestly, it’s often the most overlooked. I always tell them, 'Sun exposure is responsible for 90% of skin damage,' and without regular reapplication, even the best SPF won't do its job effectively. So, let's dive into the science behind it. There are two main reasons why your sunscreen needs to be reapplied every couple of hours. Firstly, if you're using a chemical sunscreen, the active ingredients actually work by absorbing UV rays and converting them into heat. This process, while protective, causes these ingredients to degrade over time. Imagine a shield that slowly wears down with each hit it takes from the sun. After about two hours, especially with direct sun exposure, many of these ingredients have lost a significant portion of their efficacy, leaving your skin vulnerable. Secondly, and perhaps more obviously, sunscreen gets physically removed from your skin. Think about it: are you sweating? Swimming? Wiping your face with a towel? Or even just touching your face throughout the day? All these actions contribute to the physical removal or thinning of your sunscreen layer. Even if you're just sitting indoors near a window, natural movements and environmental factors can diminish its coverage. That initial layer, no matter how perfectly applied, can migrate, thin out, or simply get rubbed off, creating unprotected patches. This is why my advice of 'Reapply that SPF!' isn't just a suggestion, it's a golden rule for skin health. Neglecting to reapply means you're essentially leaving your skin exposed to the cumulative effects of UV radiation, which, as the graphic says, accounts for a staggering 90% of visible skin aging, including wrinkles, fine lines, sun spots, and uneven skin tone. More critically, it significantly increases your risk of skin cancer. In my practice, I've seen the difference consistent reapplication makes. For those who find it a hassle, I recommend keeping a travel-sized mineral stick or a spray sunscreen in your bag. These are often easier to reapply over makeup or on the go. Even a tinted mineral powder with SPF can be a great option for a quick touch-up. Remember, the goal isn't perfection with each reapplication, but consistent coverage throughout your sun-exposed hours. Don't let your morning application be your only defense; give your skin the continuous protection it deserves all day long.
