Study Guide for STEM Majors ♾️
I recently took a free Coursera course called “Learning How to Learn” by Barbara Oakley. I wanted to share some of my notes from it. It might help you if you’re learning a language, studying a STEM subject or really anything.
My takeaways:
✍️Procrastination is caused by avoiding discomfort.
The discomfort goes away once you get started.
💪Learn discipline, not motivation.
📚Use Active Recall for memorization.
Read, then close the book immediately.
Repeat what you just read.
This is better than re-reading.
📑The way you were taught before can stop you from having an “a-ha” moment.
This is called “Einstellung”.
Relax and be open to new ways of thinking.
📖Use “interleaving”. Switch the subjects you’re studying frequently.
This will help you think creatively.
If you have trouble focusing, maybe skip this one.
🙇♀️Focus on process, not product.
Think this -> I’ll work for 20 minutes.
Not that -> I need to answer these questions.
You’ll be more motivated to study if you do this.
🗄️Don’t cram. Info takes time for your brain to process.
☕️Go for a walk, get coffee, etc if you can’t solve a problem. Sometimes you just need a break.
I hope this helped, please comment any of your favorite study tips. :)
