Study Guide for STEM Majors ♾️

I recently took a free Coursera course called “Learning How to Learn” by Barbara Oakley. I wanted to share some of my notes from it. It might help you if you’re learning a language, studying a STEM subject or really anything.

My takeaways:

✍️Procrastination is caused by avoiding discomfort.

The discomfort goes away once you get started.

💪Learn discipline, not motivation.

📚Use Active Recall for memorization.

Read, then close the book immediately.

Repeat what you just read.

This is better than re-reading.

📑The way you were taught before can stop you from having an “a-ha” moment.

This is called “Einstellung”.

Relax and be open to new ways of thinking.

📖Use “interleaving”. Switch the subjects you’re studying frequently.

This will help you think creatively.

If you have trouble focusing, maybe skip this one.

🙇‍♀️Focus on process, not product.

Think this -> I’ll work for 20 minutes.

Not that -> I need to answer these questions.

You’ll be more motivated to study if you do this.

🗄️Don’t cram. Info takes time for your brain to process.

☕️Go for a walk, get coffee, etc if you can’t solve a problem. Sometimes you just need a break.

I hope this helped, please comment any of your favorite study tips. :)

... Read moreAfter diving into some amazing insights from courses like "Learning How to Learn," I realized that while digital tools are great, there's something uniquely powerful about a physical notebook. For me, combining those smart study techniques with effective notebook use has been a game-changer, especially for challenging subjects like STEM or when learning new languages. My studies often involve complex concepts, formulas, and diagrams, so I've found that a good grid-lined spiral notebook is indispensable. It's not just for jotting things down; it's a dynamic space for thinking and processing. For instance, when tackling a new programming concept (like cloud + DJANGO), I'll often sketch out data flows or system architectures on a grid page. This visual approach helps solidify understanding far better than just reading text on a screen. The OCR even picked up on my STEM STUDY TIPS overlay, which is exactly how I approach these subjects! One of my favorite ways to use notebooks is for Active Recall, a tip mentioned in the original article. Instead of simply re-reading notes, I'll close my textbook or lecture slides and try to write down everything I can remember about a topic in my notebook. Then, I compare it to the source material, highlighting gaps in my understanding. This process is so much more effective than passive review. I also love creating a TABLE OF CONTENTS at the beginning of a multi-subject notebook, as the OCR noted one of my setups, which helps me quickly navigate between different topics like Vocab Notes for a new language and my code snippets. When it comes to organizing, colorful page tabs are my best friends. They're perfect for interleaving different subjects, allowing me to switch between, say, chemistry and history without losing my place. For language learning, my notebooks are a treasure trove. I dedicate sections for Bulgarian and Russian alphabets, grammar rules, and Vocab Notes. Practicing new writing systems on grid notes helps keep my letters consistent and neat. It’s amazing how much faster I retain vocabulary when I physically write it out and create my own example sentences. I even use a small airplane sticker to mark pages related to travel planning or cultural notes, keeping everything together. Another practical tip is to use your notebook to track your study process, not just the product. As the original article suggests, focusing on "I'll work for 20 minutes" rather than "I need to answer these questions" can boost motivation. I use my notebook as a mini-bullet journal to track these study blocks, plan out my next learning steps, and even log short breaks like "go for a walk, get coffee." This helps me stay accountable and makes seemingly overwhelming tasks feel manageable. So, if you're looking to enhance your study routine, don't underestimate the power of a well-utilized notebook. It's a personal workspace where you can actively engage with material, organize complex information, and apply powerful study techniques to truly make knowledge stick. Give it a try, and you might just find it revolutionizes your learning journey!
