What is it like to be a firefighter and EMT?
Honestly, the job is a 50/50. I won’t lie and say it’s the worst thing ever, but I won’t say it’s the best. You’re in it for the people. Sometimes it’s a stubbed toe but sometimes it’s a cardiac arrest. It’s a balance of both worlds, because you can get pulled from a medical to go to a wild land fire then to a car accident. It’s a miracle being able to help those who need it, however it can be the worst thing when someone passes. Sometimes you’re left questioning what you could have changed - if you had been there a little faster. The only thing I will say with the most certainty is it is the best thing I’ve done for my life. I have seen horrific things but I have also battled fire, carried patients to ambulances, and played a part in saving those who needed it most. I will not say I’ve never made mistakes that I have regretted deeply but it’s about picking yourself up the next day because you don’t know what each call will bring.
Being a firefighter and EMT involves a unique blend of physical demands, emotional resilience, and quick decision-making skills. In my experience, no two days are the same: one moment you are responding to a minor injury, the next you're rushing to a major crash or a fire that needs immediate attention. This emotional weight can be heavy, but learning to process these feelings is part of the job. On the positive side, the gratitude from those you've helped is incredibly rewarding. Saving lives, even in small ways, reminds you why you joined this line of work. Teamwork is essential, as firefighters and EMTs depend on each other for support physically and emotionally. Training is rigorous and continuous—staying updated on the latest medical procedures and fire safety techniques is critical. Physical fitness is also important to handle the strenuous workload safely. For anyone considering this career, understand that it requires dedication beyond just fighting fires or performing medical interventions; it demands compassion, resilience, and a willingness to face uncertainty every day. Despite the hardships, knowing you play a crucial role in your community’s safety and well-being can make it the most fulfilling job you'll ever have.
