Reclaiming your time & attention can be very easy

Making time is not supposed to be complicated, but sometimes we're too stubborn to recognize that.

Here are some pretty simple ways on how we can start reclaiming our time & attention (2 of the most important resources we have!)

Especially as a student, there may seem to be an endless amount of distraction. Being aware of these can help us change for the better!

... Read moreI used to feel like my time was constantly slipping away, especially with endless assignments and social media notifications. It felt impossible to focus, and I was always racing against the clock. But then I realized that reclaiming your time and attention can be weirdly easy – it just takes a few intentional shifts. I've been experimenting with various attention management strategies, and I'm excited to share what truly helped me turn things around. My first step was gaining awareness of where my attention was actually going. I started by simply observing what distracted me most. Was it my phone buzzing every few minutes? Was it constantly checking emails? Or was it just the sheer volume of tasks making me feel overwhelmed? Once I identified these *attention drains*, it was easier to tackle them. I even tried a simple time-tracking app for a day or two, and the results were eye-opening! I learned that you don't need a complete overhaul to see results. Implementing small changes made the biggest difference for me. Instead of trying to work for hours straight, I'd set a timer for 25 minutes of focused work, followed by a 5-minute break (the Pomodoro Technique!). This micro-habit helped me build my focus muscle without feeling overwhelmed. Another small change was preparing my study space the night before – having everything ready meant less procrastination in the morning. I also started paying attention to when I felt most naturally focused. For me, that's usually in the morning. So, I started scheduling my most demanding tasks during those peak hours. Creating an environment that supports natural focus was crucial too. I decluttered my desk, made sure I had good lighting, and even discovered the power of ambient study music (no lyrics!). Sometimes, just moving to a different room or a quiet cafe helped reset my brain. This was a big one! My phone was a constant source of distraction. I realized that simplifying technology was key to reducing these constant pulls on my attention. I turned off most notifications, especially for social media apps. I even set app limits for certain time-wasting apps. Putting my phone in another room during study sessions became a game-changer. It felt drastic at first, but the peace of mind and improved concentration were totally worth it. One of the hardest lessons I learned was giving myself permission to prioritize. It’s okay to say 'no' to extra commitments if it means protecting your study time or mental health. I used to feel guilty for not doing everything, but setting boundaries and focusing on what truly mattered allowed me to be more effective, not less. This also meant scheduling in self-care – walks, reading, downtime – because a rested mind is a focused mind. Finally, I discovered that acknowledging my efforts through positive reinforcement really motivated me to stick with these new habits. After completing a tough study session, I'd treat myself to a short break, a favorite snack, or a few minutes of browsing Lemon8. It wasn't about big rewards, but small acknowledgements that reinforced the behavior I wanted to cultivate. This made the whole process feel less like a chore and more like a journey of self-improvement. By embracing these strategies – from gaining awareness of distractions to simplifying my tech and rewarding my progress – I truly started to reclaim my time and attention. It's an ongoing process, but these simple steps have made a profound difference in my productivity and overall well-being. Give them a try; you might be surprised how easy it can be to get your focus back!
