How to digital scrapbook in Canva 🗒️
Canva is great for digital scrapbooking, even if you do not have a Pro account. With a Pro account, you would have access to many elements or frames, but you can still make it work!
If you want to create a scrapbook carousel post for social media, this is what you have to do:
1️⃣ Create a design and customize the dimensions
— The dimensions I use are 1080 x 1350 px. Those dimensions are for 1 single photo. If you want your carousel to have 6 frames, multiply 1080 x 6 = 6480.
E.g. for dimensdigitalscrapbook #scrapbook #scrapbookideas #digitaljournal #tutorial #howto 7 frames is the max you can do
2️⃣ Add photos from your camera roll and fill every frame
3️⃣ Add pics without background
— This is where you can use Canva elements or if you are using an iPad, hold on to the images to select the object and drag & drop it to Canva.
— You can also search for PNG images on Google (e.g., PNG polaroid frame)
4️⃣ Add text or doodles to the photos
5️⃣ Download as PNG
6️⃣ Google “Pinetools split image” and import your scrapbook photo
— Split Option: select horizontally
— Image Quality: Make sure it’s at 100
— Quantity of Blocks: how many frames your image will be split. If your dimensions are for 4 frames, then 4, etc.)

I've been absolutely loving my journey into digital scrapbooking with Canva, and while the main steps are pretty straightforward for carousel posts, I wanted to share a few extra tips and tricks I've picked up along the way, especially for those looking to dive deeper or tackle common questions! First off, let's talk more about Canva custom size setup. While 1080x1350 px is perfect for a single Instagram post, the magic truly happens when you calculate those larger dimensions for a multi-frame digital scrapbook carousel. Remember, if you're aiming for that seamless swipe effect, making sure your initial canvas is wide enough (like that 6480 px width for 6 frames) is crucial. A little hack I use: always add a tiny margin or guideline on Canva's canvas if you're worried about cuts when you split the image later. It gives you a visual cue for where each 'frame' will end up. And don't be afraid to experiment with other custom sizes! For an Instagram Story scrapbook, I might use 1080x1920 px, or for a printable scrapbook page, I'd go for standard paper sizes. The key is knowing what your final output will be. Speaking of output, the Pinetools split image tool is a lifesaver! I remember my first time using it, I was a bit nervous about losing quality. Always double-check that 'Image Quality' is set to 100% – it makes a huge difference. If you're creating a long carousel, sometimes the file size can get quite large before splitting, so ensure your internet connection is stable when uploading to Pinetools. A quick pro tip: save your original, unsplit scrapbook design in Canva as a separate file, just in case you ever need to go back and tweak something before re-splitting. For my fellow digital scrapbook iPad users, you're in for a treat! The drag-and-drop feature from your photo library directly into Canva is a game-changer. I also find using an Apple Pencil incredibly intuitive for adding handwritten notes or custom doodles. It really elevates that personal, crafty feel of a traditional scrapbook. When you're trying to add and arrange images, including those without backgrounds, remember that Canva's 'Elements' tab has a treasure trove. Search for 'frames' or 'grids' to easily place your photos, and for those transparent PNGs, try searching for specific objects like 'vintage flower png' or 'paper texture png' directly in Google Images, then upload them. Being able to effortlessly arrange many photos and elements truly makes the iPad ideal for this creative process. Beyond carousels, think about how you can use Canva for other digital scrapbooking projects. I've started making themed memory books for vacations or special events, essentially a longer, multi-page document in Canva. You can even explore Canva digital scrapbook template options within Canva's template library by searching "scrapbook" or "journal." These can give you a fantastic starting point if you're feeling stuck, and you can customize every single element to make it uniquely yours. From adding text to photos, to experimenting with different fonts and color palettes, Canva makes how to make a digital scrapbook a truly enjoyable and accessible hobby. It's all about telling your story visually, and Canva provides all the tools to do it beautifully, whether you're working on a desktop or your iPad.
